Eco-communities as a social vision
Egalitarian and ecological communities, like the pictured East Wind (www.eastwind.org), are very close to our vision of an ecological society

"Animal day" by Wall of Voo Doo, album: Dark Continent (1981)

Grandma is a rhino
My brother is a dog
I can tell it's Animal Day
'Cause my best friend just turned into a frog
Mommy is a monkey
My girlfriend is a horse
But I'm not turning into anything??
I never caused animal wars!
Uh-oh!
Fur has covered my hands!
I'd better run to the mirror!
I'm an animal!

It's Animal Day
It's Animal Day
It's Animal Day
It's Animal Day

Now the animals have cars
They're starting to run us over
Notches on the steering wheel
My pet is calling me Rover
Deers are hunting for humans
Seals keep crushing our heads
Animals betting on us at the track
My animal's in my bed

What might have happened if there was an Animal Day controlled by concious animals. Roles will be changing in a similar way like some human cases, either in literature or even in reality (Women's Day, Slave's Day, etc)

Album "Victims of Science" by Gammacide (1989)

Fossilized

Four and a half million years ago
The earth was lifeless and new
Life forms starting to appear
And fossils are the clues

Slowly migrating from the sea
To one day dominate the land
Early reptilians had evolved
Millions of years before man

Unchallenged masters of their world
One hundred forty million year reign
Reptilian gods stalking the earth
Undisturbed primal and serene

Mountains of flesh shaking the ground
Armored like a living tank
While our ancestors rodent-like
Trampled underfoot

Our minds can't conceive the forms of life
That have lived here before us
On the sites where our cities sprawl
Herds grazed and continued to evolve

Man's time on earth is barely a blink
Of the eye of time
Our destination is written in bones
And our predecessors fossilized

No seven day miracle created our world
From the void delivered
We have only just learned to walk
Once we had to slither

Our kind will vanish as did theirs
Leaving only traces entombed
Till those who follow unearth our remains
What will their studies conclude?

Engine of death in its highest form
Carnivore evolved to perfection
Modern predators so insignificant
Up against this tyrant king

What catastrophe fell from the skies
Ending their domination?
Wiped off the face of the earth
Not one survived extinction

Man's time on earth is barely a blink
Of the eye of time
Our destination is written in bones
And our predecessors fossilized

Victim Of Science

Minds conceive weapons to destroy
Chemical cancer created for war
Biological weapons with degenerative effects
An unfortunate fate for life it infects

Mass murder descending in sickly clouds
Victims of Science litter the ground
Stillborn mutants dying at the moment of birth
Weapons of this war poison the earth

Pacifist protest the slaughter must stop
As the environment falls apart
Chemical recall the toxic waste
Safely disposed of in a harmless place

Buried underground, dumped in the sea
Contaminate our bodies gradually
Our chromosomes filled with degradation
Passing on the curse to the next generation

Mass murder descending in sickly clouds
Victims of Science litter the ground
Stillborn mutants dying at the moment of birth
Weapons of this war poison the earth

Life as we know it will soon cease to exist
From this chemical poisoning
We've no cure for it
Nothing shall survive nuclear holocaust
Mankind is doomed
And all life is lost

Mass murder descending in sickly clouds
Victims of Science litter the ground
Stillborn mutants dying at the moment of birth
Weapons of this war poison the earth

Observations

Aerosol damaged ozone layer
Skin cancer cases increase
Human shit, A.I.D.S. tainted blood
Washed up on the beach
Drano snorting, your face contorting
Force your body to accept more
Sweating in the blood bank, selling a pint
Back to the crack house to score.

Observe, and tell me what you see
Turn your back, blind to reality
Society condemns its own fate
Wake up before it's too fucking late

Radon gas entering your home
Silent invisible death
Pesticides in your lunch
Nicotine on your breath
Preschool junkie raped by her father
By day he's the mayor of your city
A community full of back stabbing scum
No friends, no love, no pity

Observe, and tell me what you see
Turn your back, blind to reality
Society condemns its own fate
Wake up before it's too fucking late

Observe, and tell me what you see
Turn your back, blind to reality
Society condemns its own fate
Wake up before it's too fucking late

“Children of the earth” by Praying Mantis, album: Time tell no lies (1981)

Where are the mountains
Where are the trees
Together with our ashes
They're blown in the breeze
Death and destruction
Has ruined our lives
But now it's the end as mankind truly dies

For we are children of the earth
Orphans of the universe
Children of the earth
But now our mother is dead

God help us open our shuttered eyes
To see what we've done
To this once paradise
Forgive us our sins
For we were blind to the fact
That we were ruining
This land and God's holy pact

For we are children of the earth
Orphans of the universe
Children of the earth
But now our mother is dead

Time has no meaning
Time tells no lies
Man has evolved as a predator in disguise
Collect all our evils, place them side by side
There you have the potion for mass suicide

"Twilight for all mankind" by Torture Squad, album:"Hellbound" (2008)

Faces in turmoil
Going though hard times
Global warming
Is changing everybody's lives
This climate chaos
Is the Beginning of the end
It's a bitter lesson
we all have to understand
Feel the deadly heat waves
And the force of hurricanes
Droughts and mega floods
Make the earth a piece of mud
Fire is burning high
Crops are getting dry
Isn't that enough?
A point of no return

Twilight for all mankind

Ambitious leaders
In an endless decay

Fuck the planet
Filling people with dismay
Here we come again
To a sad farewell
We're too tired
To stand another painful hell
Mass migration and civil war
No resources anymore
Hungry countries in decline
Making people cross the line
Famine and diseases
Put us on our knees
The future of mankind
Rests inside our minds

Twilight for all mankind

Fire is burning again
Water is causing pain
Air is hard to breath
Insane

Droughts split the land
Fast floods expand
Leading to the end
The end

This climate chaos
Is the Beginning of the end
It's a bitter lesson
we all have to understand
Feel the deadly heat waves
And the force of hurricanes
Droughts and mega floods
Make the earth a piece of mud
Fire is burning high
Crops are getting dry
Isn't that enough?
A point of no return

Twilight for all mankind

"Morning dew" by Bonnie Dobson, Album: At Folk City (1962)

Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey
Walk me out in the morning dew today
I can't walk you out in the morning dew, my honey
I can't walk you out in the morning dew at all

Thought I heard a young girl crying, mama
Thought I heard a young girl cry today
Oh I did not hear no young girl crying, mama, mama, mama
I did not hear no young girl cry at all

Thought I heard a young boy crying
I thought I heard a young boy cry today
Oh I did not hear no young boy crying
Oh I didn't hear no young boy cry
Now there is no more morning dew
Now there is no more morning dew

What they've been saying all these years was not true
Now there is no more morning dew
No, no, no, no more - no, no, no, no more
No more morning dew
No more morning dew

"Morning Dew", also known as "(Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew", is a post-apocalyptic folk-rock song written by Canadian singer Bonnie Dobson in 1962. According to Dobson in a 1993 interview, "Morning Dew" was inspired by the 1959 film "On the Beach": The story is set in a then future 1964, in the months following World War III. The conflict has devastated the northern hemisphere, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout and killing all life. While the bombs were confined to the northern hemisphere, air currents are slowly carrying the fallout to south. The only areas still habitable are in the far southern hemisphere, like Australia.... The song was covered many times by famous artists like Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Nazareth, Grateful Dead, etc. (wikipedia)

"Unatural Selection" by Ayreon, album: 01011001 (2008)

We have to teach them all that we know
Their evolution moves far too slow
Expand their minds and reject compliance
Upgrade their knowledge, upload our science

This revolution will lead to their demise,
We should not make the same mistake twice
We're kept alive by artificial means
We've lost our souls to a world of machines

Listen to the Warning [8X]

We need to teach them to fight disease
They seem so helpless and need our expertise

I see them dying all across the globe
Their greatest foe is but a small microbe

The sudden change leads to overpopulation
Shifting the balance, destructive habitation
Killing a live biological invasion
Consuming it by ruthless exploitation

Can you see the fire in their eyes?
Can you hear the anguish in their cries?
Can you see the beauty in their eyes?
Can you sense the love within their hearts?
I can taste the freedom we once had
I can touch their pain when they feel sad
I can smell the fragrance of the air
I remember times we used to share

(Don't want to live in a world that's dying)
(Don't want to live in a world that's dead)

Listen to the warning [8X]

(Before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all
humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction)

(Human Kind has acquired a collective power and ability to
dramatically alter the environment of the entire planet)

(This will not be another Vietnam)
(The only thing we have to fear is fear itself)

(Our task is not only to win the battle, but to win the war)

We gave them feelings what did they sense?
Shout out the world at their defence.
We gave them science what did they do?
They built a bomb and they used it too.

We gave them wisdom, what did they learn?
Wore out the planet and mare it burn!
We gave them armor, what did they make?
Nuclear weapons for their own sake!
We gave them insight what did they see?
Vanquish the noble, enslave the free!
We gave them wisdom, what did they seek?
Destroying all that's within their reach!
We gave them language, what did they say?
They put the planet in disarray!
We gave them dreams!
What did they dream?

Don't want to live in a world that's dying.
Don't want to live in a world that's dead.

Listen to the warning [8X]

A chain on guilt around her neck
A planet straying in darkness

What can we say in lives we wreck?
I say we should find a way
I say stop this decay

Can you see the fire in their eyes?
Can you hear the anguish in their cries?
Can you see the beauty in their eyes?
Can you sense the love within their hearts?
I can taste the freedom we once had.
I can touch their pain
I can smell the fragrance of the air.
I remember times we used to share.

A concept album about a race of extraterrestrials that plan to colonize earth and various ethics towards life forms and use or exploitation of the planet are risen. These extraterestrials were come from a planet where machines allienated them and also they are beyond restrictions of time observing the evolution on Earth from Dinosaurs to humans. They question themselves about the pros and cons of a possible intervention to speed the techological evolution in humans or leave them in their fate. At last they deside to give people technology and intelligence, but humans used these gifts with the worst way leading earth to destruction, in a similar way the extraterrestrials destroyed their own civilization reproducing unwillingly a similar circle of evolution and detruction. We present the lyrics of one song, the rest you can find them in Dark Lyrics Also you can read the story in wikipedia

"Mother Earth Crying" by Baron, album: Soca Uprising (1994)

In the beginning by the sixth day morning
The whole creation was given birth
And then God made man and gave him dominion
Over every living creature on the earth
Tragedy in the garden, we all know whey happen
Shamefully banished from Eden
We witness the first Paradise lost
And since then is Mother Earth who end up paying the cost
That's why I'm begging

Mother Earth is crying, she say to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Mother Earth is dying, we got to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Whole attitude got to change, and priorities rearrange
We got to become more competent
The way we protect the environment
And fight, fight for all that it's worth
Fight to save Mother Earth...oy oy oy
Mother earth crying... oy oy
In case you don't know, the planet Earth dying slow
What a sad way to go.

The ozone layer's depleting
Endless factories belching tons of pollutants in the atmosphere
Rivers and seas can't escape
On Mother Earth, we constantly commit rape
We even planing to strip the Amazon bare
Acid rain on the ------- , species hunted to extinction
A roller coaster ride to self-destruction
Stop mankind from digging a certain grave
We got to get together is Mother Earth we must save
That's why I'm grieving

Mother Earth is crying, she say to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Mother Earth is crying, we got to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Whole attitude got to change, and priorities rearrange
We got to become more competent
The way we protect the environment
And fight, fight for all that it's worth
Fight to save Mother Earth...oy oy oy
Mother earth crying... oy oy
In case you don't know, the planet Earth dying slow
What a sad way to go.

Massive global warming with the sea level rising
Islands and continents like Holland may be no more
As natural resources deplete, people can't find food to eat
Famine for both rich and poor
Impossible you might think, but we tottering on the brink
Next thing you know we become extinct
The cancer we create a Mother Earth sore
And she is going to give up the ghost when she can't take no more...no more

Mother Earth is crying, she say to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Mother Earth is crying, we got to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Whole attitude got to change, and priorities rearrange
We got to become more competent
The way we protect the environment
And fight, fight for all that it's worth
Fight to save Mother Earth...oy oy oy
Mother earth crying... oy oy
In case you don't know, the planet Earth dying slow
What a sad way to go.

Today the things we nurture could determine the future
And pray what would the picture be
See grandson and granddaughter fighting, chaos and disaster
As Mother Earth protest violently
Wake up, wake up people and be part of the struggle!
The planet earth in serious trouble
We got to end this melancholy refrain
We cannot afford to lose Paradise again
That's why I'm pleading

Mother Earth is crying, she say to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Mother Earth is Dying, we got to stop the polluting...oy oy oy
Whole attitude got to change, and priorities rearrange
We got to become more competent
The way we protect the environment
And fight, fight for all that it's worth
Fight to save Mother Earth...oy oy oy
Mother Earth crying... oy
In case you don't know, the planet Earth dying slow
What a sad way to go.

A reggae song that talks about social and environmental issues as a whole. And calls us to change the whole way of thinking and attitudes about development and about our roles, towards Mother Earth...

"Concrete Jungle" by The Wailers, album: Catch a Fire (1973)

No sun will shine in my day today; (no sun will shine)
The high yellow moon won't come out to play:
(that high yellow moon won't come out to play)
I said (darkness) darkness has covered my light,
(and the stage) And has changed my day into night, yeah.
Where is the love to be found? (oo-ooh-ooh)
Won't someone tell me?
'Cause my (sweet life) life must be somewhere to be found -
(must be somewhere for me)
Instead of concrete jungle (jungle!)
Where the living is harder (concrete, jungle!).

Concrete jungle (jungle!):
Man you got to do your (concrete, jungle!) best. Wo-ooh, yeah.

No chains around my feet,
But I'm not free, oh-ooh!
I know I am bound here in captivity;
G'yeah, now - (never, know) I've never known happiness;
(never, know) I've never known what sweet caress is -
Still, I'll be always laughing like a clown;
Won't someone help me? 'Cause I (sweet life) -
I've got to pick myself from off the ground
(must be somewhere for me), he-yeah! -
In this a concrete jungle (jungle!):
I said, what do you got for me (concrete, jungle!) now, o-oh!
Concrete jungle (la la-la!), ah, won't you let me be (concrete, jungle!), now.
Hey! Oh, now!

I said that life (sweet life) - it must be somewhere to be found
(must be somewhere for me)
Oh, instead of concrete jungle (jungle!) - illusion (concrete, jungle!) -
confusion (confusion). (concrete, jungle!) Eh!

Concrete jungle (jungle!): baby, you've got it in.
Concrete jungle (concrete,jungle!), now. Eh!
Concrete jungle (jungle!).

What do you got for me (concrete, jungle!), now?

"Little Fighter" by White Lion, album: Big Game (1989)

are you cryin' tonight, are you
feelin' alright
i'll tell the world that you are,
down on yourluck, you were
one of the kind
one who'd never give in
even when they put a price on your head

has anyone heard the tales you tell
or seen the scars you wear
did anyone speak up when you fell
does anybody care

rise again little fighter
and let the world know the reason why
shine again little fighter
and don't let 'em end the things you do

and you were one with a cause,
and a reason to be
you were a fighter for peace
on this earth
and you were never afraid
you put your life on the line
and you were always alone
out on the sea

without a weapon in your hand
you came to fight a war
they took your life, but didn't know
that you would never die

rise again little fighter
and let the world know the reason why
shine again little fighter
and don't let 'em end the things you do

are you feelin' alright
cause i care

rise again little fighter
and let the world know the reason why
shine again little fighter
and don't let 'em end the things you do

rise again little fighter
and let the world know the reason why
shine again little fighter
and don't let 'em end the things you do

We read in wikipedia:

The song is about a Greenpeace boat named "Rainbow Warrior" which was illegally destroyed by the French. Inside the Big Game album booklet, where the Little Fighter lyrics are it says "In Memory of Rainbow Warrior" in brackets next to the name.

Unlike most bands of their genre, White Lion recorded occasional songs that addressed social or political issues such as apartheid ("Cry for Freedom") and the effect of divorce on children ("Broken Home"). The song "Little Fighter" was about the Rainbow Warrior, a ship owned by the environmental group Greenpeace that was destroyed by operatives of the French intelligence service. This concern for political and social
issues was also hinted at in the cover art to their album Big Game, which featured a lion's head hidden in tall grass with the White House in the background.

"Rain" by Fauna (2006)

Before the stars fled our sky
When we spoke the old tongue
When our mouths were filled with dirt
Our tongues danced as trees

As owl flies to cedar bough...

Shadow unto shadow falls
The wrung earth stills
Smoke rises from an empty face
Inkstain from the heart spreads

Hot tears spill
From the sky's open seam
An ash breeze pours
From our pure mouths
Partake of this dying fruit

Footprints fill with poison water
Footprints toward the forest fade

As animals we gather
Around the womb-hole in the ground
Shed this flimsy skin
Ignite our eyes again

Shadow opens
Nature's hands enfold
Listen: wind inside
Wind, harbinger

Under a raged cloth of sky
And the moon's blazing eye
Burrow deep in blackest earth
And break further

Hands blackened with my own blood
Piece me back together
Unburden the gutted beast
Fill the abyssal chest with leaves
I, great wound the wind whips,
Disappear.

[Those who love will forget they loved]

The ugly past curls in the fire
Shadows cast their figures
Into the swallowing mist.

"Ka-ching" by Shania Twain, album" Up (2002)

We live in a greedy little world--
that teaches every little boy and girl
To earn as much as they can possibly--
then turn around and
Spend it foolishly
We've created us a credit card mess
We spend the money that we don't possess
Our religion is to go and blow it all
So it's shoppin' every Sunday at the mall

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

Can you hear it ring
It makes you wanna sing
It's such a beautiful thing--Ka-ching!
Lots of diamond rings
The happiness it brings
You'll live like a king
With lots of money and things

When you're broke go and get a loan
Take out another mortgage on your home
Consolidate so you can afford
To go and spend some more when
you get bored

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

Let's swing
Dig deeper in your pocket
Oh, yeah, ha
Come on I know you've got it
Dig deeper in your wallet
Oh

All we ever want is more
A lot more than we had before
So take me to the nearest store

Can you hear it ring
It makes you wanna sing
You'll live like a king
With lots of money and things
Ka-ching!

A distinctive song from a famous pop singer, usually singing about love and men. Its about the disease of our societies, the consumerism, and the feeling of internal emptiness we feel, trying in vain to fill it with shopping therapy. We read in wikipedia:

The song deals with America's consumer culture through boom years of 1990s and early 2000s....Lyrically, the song talk about the greed in the world....The video depicts a city consumed with greed, Twain finds the streets empty and cars left abandoned while everyone is in a casino, sticking with the theme of the song. Scenes of Twain sporting a silver outfit and a dress (red in the pop version, green in the country version, and blue in the world version) are intercut throughout the video. The pop version with the red dress was the one typically used. "Ka-Ching!" is one of only two Shania videos to remain commercially unavailable.
