Pink Floyd's Best of "Echoes" was promoted as Carbon neutral

Music industry can't be out of the spirit of the time, the global warming concern, especially when such a perspective will be a very good profitable investment. In a co-operation with the The CarbonNeutral Company (ex Future Forests), a consulting company for planetary carbon reduction, they promote Pink Floyd's Best of "Echoes" as carbon Neutral, supporting a forest planting campaign that compensates for the carbon emmisions of the production and distribution of the album. We read in PR Newswire:

Pink Floyd breathe life into new forests

Future Forests help Pink Floyd make their latest album Carbon Neutral

Today Future Forests announce their latest music-based project to tackle global warming with an innovative, environmental initiative as Pink Floyd release their forthcoming Carbon Neutral(r) album "Echoes" on the 5th November 2001, through EMI:Chrysalis.

This partnership will result in the creation of four new "long term indigenous" forests around the world in Scotland (Dryhope Burn), India, Mexico and Louisiana in the US.

The number of trees planted will be sufficient to absorb the emissions of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, caused by the production and distribution of the band's CDs. The more albums Pink Floyd sell - the more forests get planted. Pink Floyd fans can get involved by planting trees online at http://www.pinkfloyd.com. Each will receive a branded certificate and map, and the trees will be planted in the Pink Floyd forests.

Global climate change is the single biggest threat to the survival of our world, and this partnership allows Pink Floyd to communicate with their fans on a global scale.

The music industry was one of the first supporters of Future Forests. All this began four years ago around the campfire at Glastonbury Festival, when Neneh Cherry was so excited about the Future Forests initiative she helped the company talk to other music industry legends including Neil Tennant, and the networking process began.

Dan Morrell, founder of Future Forests says, "Our climate is changing. We can all do something to stop the problem escalating - and no action is too small. Alongside reducing emissions at source, forestry has a real role to play, soaking up some of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are proud to be working with Pink Floyd and their fans, to help make a difference."

Pink Floyd's new album "Echoes" is released on the 5th November 2001, and is a career spanning retrospective 2 CD set of 26 of their greatest hits.

Notes to Editors

Future Forests' support from the music industry includes Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Afrika Bambaataa, Alex James, Joe Strummer, Neneh Cherry, Billie, Atomic Kitten, UB40, Damien Hirst, Glastonbury Festival and Tower Records (and many more).

* Future Forests, leading international environmental business, works with business and the public to deliver simple and effective solutions to global climate change. The service was founded and built on the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through 'gold standard' forestry.

* Future Forests' Carbon Neutral(r) symbol is applied to a wide variety of its client operations, products or services. The symbol signals to staff, customers and the public that Future Forests has used best practice carbon offset projects to absorb or balance an equivalent amount of CO2 from the atmosphere to that released in making the product or delivering the service.

* Future Forests' clients number over 90 businesses including Barclays, Avis, Mazda, Hilton Hotels and the RAC; 10,000+ members of the public; and a growing number of celebrities.

* Future Forests' 'gold standard' offset projects are those which remove carbon dioxide emissions in ways which protect and enhance the natural environment, and which support the socio-economic development of the societies in which the projects are established.

* The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management (ECCM) is a specialist team of scientists and advisors in carbon management to government and industry. ECCM works with Future Forests to undertake emissions assessment and to conduct regular inspection of all planting sites to how many trees need to be planted in specific areas to re-absorb the promised level of carbon dioxide.
Let's now hear some old Pink Floyd's songs in memory of the late Syd Barrett:

Album: “Όλα από χέρι καμένα” (All burned by the hand) (1988) Lyrics:Kostas Tripolitis, Music:Thanos Mikroutsikos, Performer:Vasilis Papakonstantinou

Twenty years before, three great greek artists joined together to produce this unconventional and under-appreciated album that no matter it passed unnoticed in our country and generally received negative reviews mainly for its pessimistic or brutal and nasty language of its lyrics, it has many ardent followers and is considered a classic work in modern greek rock music. We present two songs from this album:

Boom

After the Great Boom
millions of lenses making zoom
Beautiful views of the destruction
Flesh and fire to feed yourself
When the spider will feel genius
Living squeezed in a crack of a concrete roof

You’ve said it will take time
for litters to become a pile
and to cover buildings up to roofs
to die with slow deaths
for new pyrotechnists to be born
to worth to return to planet earth

The life that I killed by myself
is the life that I’m longing for
I am covered with your blankets
I have strained my ears to your body
Your existence is like a sunken ship
You call me last radio operator

In the morning, when calling a taxi
I feel burned in an acid
In the passers-by eyes I saw
razor slashes of yesterday dreams
Your nails are bright red by the manon
You’re the culprit and the victim of conditions

A post-apocalyptic song about a dystopian society after a nuclear or environmental holocaust, about the terrible Now, about the warnings in the Past, and about the continuing indifference, cynism or vanity in a harsh environment (Spectaculation of the disaster, beautification in every day sick atmosphere)

A song that is a sarcasm to our worship of consumerism by making it a fundamental social value and be trapped by becoming addicted to it. A society that is manipulated by a kits mixture of old fashion traditions and modern fake plastic items and values, and by a salad of things, actions and ideas having an ideological content either of high quality and importance or inferior and unimportant.

THE GRASS IS NO GREEN by Aphrodite’s Child, Album: End of the world (1968)

The land is starving
it needs watering
The birds on the trees
won't open the spring
for the rain won't fall here
and the grass is no green

The birds stop singing
they need some raining

the birds on the trees
will not live till spring
for the rain won't falling
and the grass is no green
the grass is no green

Deep in a clearing
lovers are sleeping
under an oak tree
wind blows lightly
while they are lying
where the grass is no green

The land is starving
it needs watering
The birds on the trees
won't open the spring
for the rain won't falling
and the grass is no green

The birds stop singing
they need some raining
The birds on the trees
will not live till spring
and the grass is no green
the grass is no green

Deep in a clearing
lovers are sleeping
under an oak tree
wind blows lightly
while they are lying
where the grass is no green

The birds stop singing
they need some raining
the birds on the trees
will not live till spring
for the rain wouldn't falling
And the grass is no green
the grass is no green

Far back to sixties for one of the most world famous greek rock bands with lyrics in English, the "Aphrodite’s Child". Their peak of their carrier was “666” in 1971, but in late sixties they have released interesting works, like “End of the world” where the presented song is included. It’s about an extensive dry season where rain stops falling, soil and grass run dry and life cycle is in great danger. So to speak, it fortells the climatic change and global warming, especially in their (and our)country Greece that today is suffering from extensive dry seasons and public policy of prevention is completely non-existent.

Album: Recycled by Nektar (1975)

Recycle

Call me down, the time is here
reminding you to slow the wheel
now, nearing the end of the day,
look, never a moment too soon, or late.
Count the hours, the weeks the days,
forcing natures' slow decay
here, as we look down on you there
you, fall on into your web of despair.
Man! You had it all your own way,
Now, salvaging blocks of decay.
Clean the scene;
Change machines!

Recycle Countdown

Talk away, the die is cast
all the day, the reasons last.
Just look what is happening here
see, never a day without fear...It's here!
Calm me down, I have to share
before the world I stand declared.
Hear these words at the end of the day
come never a moment too soon. or late.
Man! You had it all your own way,
Now, salvaging blocks of decay.
Clean the scene;
Change machines!

Automation Horrorscope (spoken by Mo)

Webs of concrete giving off waste dust that marks the search of an age of a thousand vast empires, Sweeping away legends untold to human ears. While shafts of steel clutch the stars, natural supplies...once numerous..now lapse into eerie silence recycled energy becomes the only form of life as it was and now new forms are moulded from patterns already used in a struggle to survive!
You had me thinking that I lost my mind
but no, it was you.

Thought you'd make it to a better time
'til now, but it's through.
Your castles made of sand
hold out out your helpless hands
going down down down
downdown down down
They take it all
then take much more...today,
no man could ever realize
his mistakes,
They will help you one step down...
sit back... and watch you drown
going down down down
Going down down down
down down down

Recycling

Here, there, new wonders gently steal,
disguised distorted like moonlit seas
...and I see
you've taken all you need,
queue up, don't fear
there's mans new fortune here...you hear.
Song-birds, recycling, the same old tune,
Still you slave onwards, 'till all is used.
...tho' I'll see
you'll get the life you need,
queue up don't fear,
it's the man who brought you here...you hear.

Flight To Reality

You live in stainless forts,
with glass walls around,
Fight against recourses
with your head in the ground,
A nation's urgent greed
fulfils anothers greed
going down down down
down down down down
Fly across the concrete jungle
high in the clouds
Looking up to crystal mountains so proud.
No need to wonder why
nature slowly dies
going down down down
Going down down down
down down down down.

Unendless Imagination?

Do you see? Do you see?
Do you do you see? Do you see?
Do you see the ruins
of a life gone by?
Built upon by burning towers
lighting the sky,
Imagine you're the prince of eagles
tears in your eyes,
Do you see there's not much time
before we go
down down...
down down down down

Sao Paulo Sunrise

Dream, away on the waves,
using the money you've saved,
Our work is done, we'll bathe in the sun
gonna take a trip let's fly down to Rio.
Some solitude is all that we need,
deserted beach were the air is do free-o.

Costa Del Sol

Cares cast aside
see the seas calm and wide.
Small isle,
virgin paradise,
Warm smiles
floating in the tides.
Find some desolate place
now it's out of the way
Soon, through words passed by mouth,
Friends are crowding you out,
Same place
natures changed its face,
Warm smiles
stretching out for miles.
Searching in haste
Finding refuge and waste

Marvellous Moses

Never thought he’d ever
get his metal boat
to fly in the air,
Moses did it...
With a string at each end,
We nearly all died
when he tugged and he sighed
saying “you are the fools”,
Moses did it...
With his hair tied to his shoes.
Come around here
they say you’ve got something to hide.
I’ve never met a man like Moses
with so much time.
Moses had a thought
to put another hill
on a mountain,
Moses did it...
With a spoon in each hand.
To our surprise
Moses closed up his eyes
saying “show me no rules”,
Moses did it...
With his arms tied to his side.
Come around here
they say you’ve got something to hide.
I’ve never met a man like Moses
with so much time.
Came the great day
Moses tried to drink a lake
for a penny
Moses did it...
O man, he looked heavy
He walked around all day
saying “I’ve got so much pain,
give me a shove”,
Moses did it...
Tourist attraction!

It's All Over

Come tomorrow
I’m going to
be the one that
you will follow.
Your world is so
upside down ‘cos
it’s all over now.
Take the high road and you’ll
take the low one,
see it all through those
passing hours,
These moments seem
so inside out
it’s all over now...
It’s all over!
See the daytime you’ve
seen the darkness I’m
torn apart through those
many changes.
A feeling that
you’ll understand,
It’s all over now.
See me walking and
hear me talking. I’ll
guide you all through those
endless ages.
Your world was so
upside down but
it’s all over now.
It’s all over.
A feeling that
you’ll understand
it’s all over

Maybe the first concept album dedicated to human/nature relation. We have presented many albums of 60s-70s with more than 2-3 songs about nature, but this is the first which has related title, and also seems to tell a complete sci-fi story about a futute technological humanmade environment that consumes and runs out of natural sources. Nature suffers a lot, so do people who try to escape to isolated remnants of natural landscapes, to be soon destructed by turning them to crowded places. At last, the inevitable end is too close to try to stop the tide. We think the track “Marvellous Moses” is ironic about human arrogance for his “magic” abilities to transform huge landscapes for his own sake.

Album: Sonic attack by Hawkwind, 1981

Lost Chances

Crystal evenings, long ago,
Twisted winds and weeping snow
We missed a turning in the past,
Is there anything that can last

The race is run, the time is right,
Get out your gun it's time to fight
And all our dreams just turn to dust,
Look to the future forget the past

Mistakes you've made can't be redeemed,
They are made because you dreamed a dream
Honest sunsets turn to paint,
The lie you tell becomes a taint

The house you built reverts to dust,
The sword you held it turns to rust
The lies you tell destroy your will,
The price you paid you're paying still

And the rocks in the river grow higher and higher
As the water gets lower and lower
There are ghosts in our lives that will not fade
There are ghosts in our lives that will not fade,
Until we've paid

A song about irreversible changes done by humans, either in nature, or in society and about a price that must be paid

We're living on a knife edge

Everytime I go out, I think I'm bring checked out,
Faceless people watching on a TV screen
Do you begin to sense it, just beneath the surface
Reflections of a window whilst walking down the street
Computers are abused, school records are fed
Police are checking on what you said
The number of your car's fed into a box
Your journey's being checked, it's a paradox
Duplicate forms, and ID cards are next in line to disregard

Future generations are relying on us
It's a world we've made - Incubus
We're living on a knife edge, looking for the ground

The need of a safe society created an orwellian everyday life. There is also a concern about what society future generations would inherit from us.

OLD MAN NOLL by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Album: Brujo 1974

OLD MAN NOLL WAS A MEAN OLD SOUL
HE LIVED ACROSS THE HILL
I DIDN’T KNOW HIM VERY WELL
AND NOW I NEVER WILL

HE HAD SOME SHEEP THAT GRAZED HIS LAND
AND HE WAS VERY OLD
AND ALL THE KIDS WOULD STAY AWAY
WE KNEW HE WAS A SCOLD

BUT OUR BEST TREEHOUSE WAS ON HIS HILL
AND OUR NAVY SAILED ON HIS POND
THE YEARS HAVE ONLY BROUGHT ME PAIN
NOW I’M SAD THE OLD MAN’S GONE ..CAUSE NOW

CHORUS:
THE FREEWAY ROLLS WHERE OLD MAN NOLL
USED TO RUN HIS SHEEP IN THE MEADOW
AND AS YOU DRIVE BY, IF YOU REALLY TRY
YOU STILL CAN SEE HIS SHADOW

OLD MAN NOLL WAS A MEAN OLD SOUL
AT LEAST THE KIDS THOUGHT SO
BUT WE WERE MUCH, MUCH YOUNGER THEN
AND NOW, I JUST DON’T KNOW

THE WAY IT WAS WHEN IT WAS HIS
THE LAND WAS CLEAR AND FREE
THE LAND WAS LIFE AND WITH HIS WIFE
WAS ALL THAT HE COULD SEE

SO WHEN THE HOUSES CAME AND BROUGHT
THE KIDS WHO THOUGHT HE WAS MEAN
I THINK THAT NOW, AT LAST I SEE
HOW SAD HE MUST HAVE BEEN …CAUSE NOW

THE FREEWAY ROLLS WHERE OLD MAN NOLL
USED TO RUN HIS SHEEP IN THE MEADOW
AND AS YOU DRIVE BY, IF YOU REALLY TRY
YOU STILL CAN SEE HIS SHADOW

CEMENT, CLAY AND GLASS

I LIVE BY THE SIDE OF ROLLING OAKS ROAD
TRACT 25 JUST LIKE THE MAN SHOWED IT TO ME
NOTHIN' TO HIDE IT, NOTHIN' BESIDE IT
I REALLY CAN'T FIGHT IT, THE WHOLE PLACE IS BLIGHTED WITH

CEMENT, CLAY AND GLASS
TREES AWAY, CONTRACTOR'S PAY
NO DELAY, 10 UNITS TODAY
OF CEMENT, CLAY AND GLASS

TREES GREEN, NONE TO BE SEEN
YOU CUT DOWN THE HILLS BUT YOU PAY HIGHER BILLS
FOR YOUR CEMENT, CLAY AND GLASS
CEMENT, CLAY AND GLASS

I LIVE BY THE SIDE OF ROLLING OAKS ROAD

a song about the unatural urban environment which is hostile to trees, free space and our vital needs.

THANK THE DAY

SAILING ON THE OCEAN LEAVING ALL CONFUSION
OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU WANT TO BE
SAILING UP THE GREEN WALL LAUGHING AS THE WIND BLOWS
SINGING, SLIDING DOWN THE OTHER SIDE
WORKING IN THE SUN HAVING GOOD HARD FUN
WHEN NIGHTTIME COMES WE'LL REST AND THANK THE DAY
WE THANK THE DAY

LANDING ON AN ISLAND I COULDN'T KEEP FROM SMILING
THE PEOPLE THERE WERE FRIENDLY AS CAN BE
LIVIN' IN AN OCEAN OF SYNCOPATED MOTION
LAUGHING, SINGING ALL OUR CARES AWAY
WORKING IN THE SUN OUR DAYS BE SPENT IN FUN
WHEN NIGHTTIME COMES WE'LL REST AND THANK THE DAY
WE THANK THE DAY

SAILING ON THE OCEAN LEAVING ALL CONFUSION
OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU WANT TO BE
SAILING UP THE GREEN WALL LAUGHING AS THE WIND BLOWS
SINGING, SLIDING DOWN THE OTHER SIDE
WORKING IN THE SUN OUR DAYS BE SPENT IN FUN

Album: A question of Balance by Moody Blues, 1970

"Question"

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us
There is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution
That is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That's what the wall of love is for.

It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me.
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be.

And when you stop and think about it
You won't believe it's true.
That all the love you've been giving
Has all been meant for you.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the the love I knew
Could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains
And the crashing of the sea
There lies a land I once lived in
And she's waiting there for me.

But in the grey of the morning
My mind becomes confused
Between the dead and the sleeping
And the road that I must choose.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the the love I knew
Could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew.
To learn as we grow old
The secrets of our souls.

"How Is It (We Are Here)"

How is it we are here, on this path we walk,
In this world of pointless fear, filled with empty talk,
Descending from the apes as scientist-priests all think,
Will they save us in the end, we're trembling on the brink.

Men's mighty mine-machines digging in the ground,
Stealing rare minerals where they can be found.
Concrete caves with iron doors, bury it again,
While a starving frightened world fills the sea with grain.

Her love is like a fire burning inside,
Her love is so much higher it can't be denied,
She sends us her glory, it's always been there,
Her love's all around us, it's there for you and me to share.

Men's mighty mine-machines digging in the ground,
Stealing rare minerals where they can be found.
Concrete caves with iron doors, bury it again,
While a starving frightened world fills the sea with grain.

How is it we are here
How is it we are here
How is it we are here

"Don't You Feel Small"

Ask the mirror on the wall
Who's the biggest fool of all,
Bet you feel small,
It happens to us all.

See the world
Ask what's it for,
Understanding, nothing more,
Don't you feel small,
It happens to us all.

Time is now to spread your voice,
Time's to come there'll be no choice,
Why do you feel small,
It happens to us all.

Look at progress,
Then count the cost,
We'll spoil the seas
With the rivers we've lost.

See the writing on the wall,
Hear the mirror's warning call.
That's why you feel small,
It happens to us all.

Ask the mirror on the wall
Who's the biggest fool of all,
Bet you feel small,
It happens to us all.

In this album Moody Blues deal with social-orientated questioning about our destination, our arrogance, the questionable concept of progress, war and some ecological references (bold parts).

We read in wikipedia about this album:

For the first time, The Moody Blues used political strife as a basis for songwriting with the UK number two hit in May 1970, "Question", which dealt with the controversy resulting from the ongoing Vietnam War.

The Hand of Man by country joe and the fish, album: C.J. Fish, 1970

It's many an hour I've been thinking of our fate
Doomed it seemed to live in a world of fear and hate.
I thought about the good and the love there could be,
How fear can blind a man, how people are not free.

Hey, take my hand and come walk with me,
Brothers and sisters we all can be
From a spark in the dark from the hand of man
Peace and understanding spread through our land.

I gazed into the sky and saw the rains come down
I saw the deadly poisons flowing to the ground.
The rivers and the oceans turned into a grave
All years of effort wasted there was nothing left to save.

Hey, take my hand and come walk with me,
Brothers and sisters we all can be;
From a spark in the dark from the hand of man
Peace and understanding spread through our land.

An awareness about the future of mankind and our ignorance, not only about environment and its pollution, but also about ourselves who live in fear and insecurity, isolated with no bonds of solidarity and compassion.

will you let it run your life

someone will be waiting for you at your door
when you get home tonight
ah yes he's gonna tell you darkness gives you much more
than you get from the light

classic plastic guards well they're your special friends
they see you every night
well they call themselves your brothers
but you know it's no game
you're never out of their sight

it's time you started thinking inside your head
that you should stand up and fight
oh where will you be when the freedom must end
just one year from tonight

classic plastic coppers are your special friends
they see you every night
well they call themselves protection
but they know it's no game
you're never out of their sight

I'm gonna run through the jungle
I'm not going to ever come back

a futuristic song, inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, about the consequences of the need for protection and security. The more protection the more loss of freedom. But the “need” for protection was the perfect excuse for freedom and human rights restrictions by authorities who also change or reverse the meaning of the words. We can see it today in the so-called war against terrorism, but under this pretext, the real enemies are the free citizens who struggle for a better way of living and for a healthy environment and against them are the new real terroristic laws and acts.

Are they just lyrics or a strong musical accusation for the common bad habits our consuming/discarding civilization bequeathed to us?

New riders of the Purple Sage, album: NRPS, 1971 part 2

DIRTY BUSINESS

WELL THE MARSHALL CAME TO TOWN
AND HIS HAT WAS PULLED WAY DOWN
HE LOOKED LIKE HE HAD BUSINESS ON HIS MIND
HE DIDN’T STOP TO SAY
HE JUST RODE ALONG HIS WAY
‘TIL HE STOPPED IN AT THE OFFICE OF THE MINE

CHORUS:
DIRTY BUSINESS, DIRTY BUSINESS
DIRTY BUSINESS DOWN IN COAL CREEK
DIRTY BUSINESS DOWN IN COAL CREEK
THIS MORNING

WELL, I MAKE TWO BUCKS A DAY
AND THAT AIN’T A HEALTHY PAY
MY KIDS ARE JUST BEGINNING TO GET SICK
THERE’S TALK BEEN GOIN’ ROUND
HOW THEY’RE GONNA SHUT IT DOWN
IF THE MAN DON’T COME AND FIX THINGS
PRETTY QUICK

REPEAT CHORUS

PRETTY SOON THERE WAS A CROWD
IT WAS GETTING’ PRETTY LOUD
AND THE MEN ALL SAID THERE’D BE NO WORK TODAY
BUT THE OWNER WOULDN’T BUDGE
HE JUST SAT THERE LIKE A JUDGE
AND HE WOULDN’T GIVE A NICKEL MORE IN PAY

CHORUS:
DIRTY BUSINESS, DIRTY BUSINESS
DIRTY BUSINESS DOWN IN COAL CREEK
DIRTY BUSINESS DOWN IN COAL CREEK
THIS MORNING

JUST THEN THEY HEARD THE SOUND
THAT RUMBLED FROM THE GROUND
AND EVERYONE WAS RUSHING FOR THE DOOR
THE DUST CAME POURING OUT
AND IT FINALLY LEFT NO DOUBT
THAT THE MINE WAS NOT AT ISSUE ANYMORE

REPEAT CHORUS

A strong sociopolitical/ecological song about a coal mine that no matter the pollution it produces and the health risks, no environmental measures are taken and unemployed people are forced to work in it. But health and people are over profits so a strong demonstration takes place, the owner refuses to take measures or to spend a dime for, so the crowd takes law in his hand by destroying the mine.

WHATCHA GONNA DO

WATCHA GONNA DO ON THE PLANET TODAY
MISSY YOU’RE SO FINE TO SEE
AND WHERE YA GONNA GO ON THE PLANET TODAY
MISSY COME AND PLAY WITH ME

TAKE A LOOK AROUND YA NOW AND
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
IF YOU COULD GO SOMEWHERE’S ELSE NOW,
WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
WHEN THE FIND THE PLACE TO HIDE
COME AND TELL ME WHERE IT IS NOW,
I’LL STILL BE SITTING HERE, SINGING IN THE AIR

WHERE YA GONNA GO ON THE PLANET TODAY
MISSY THERE’S SO MUCH TO SEE
AND WHATCHA GONNA DO ON THE PLANET TODAY
MISSY I’D LIKE TO BE WITH THEE
TAKE A LOOK AROUND YA NOW AND
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
IF YOU COULD GO SOMEWHERE’S ELSE NOW,
WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
WHEN THE FIND THE PLACE TO HIDE
COME AND TELL ME WHERE IT IS NOW,
I’LL STILL BE SITTING HERE, SINGING IN THE AIR

WATCHA GONNA DO ON THE PLANET TODAY
OH, MISSY YOU’RE SO FINE TO SEE
AND WHERE YA GONNA GO ON THE PLANET TODAY
MISSY I’D LIKE TO BE WITH THEE

TAKE A LOOK AROUND YA NOW AND
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
IF YOU COULD GO SOMEWHERE’S ELSE NOW,
WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
WHEN THE FIND THE PLACE TO HIDE
COME AND TELL ME WHERE IT IS NOW,
I’LL STILL BE SITTING HERE, SINGING IN THE AIR

A call to environmental awareness. We must take into account the impacts our actions have on planet earth and the ecosystems, because we are part of it and when collapse will come there is no place to hide

Happiness Is a Porpoise Mouth by country joe and the fish, album: Electric Music for the Mind and Body,1967

The white ducks fly on past the sun,
Their wings flash silver at the moon.
While waters rush down the mountain tongue
My organs play a circus tune.
I dance to the wonder of your feet
And sing to the joy of your knees.
The cold white dress on the mountain breast
Paints the frozen trees.

The maple plants patterns in the sky
Its leaves to kiss the wind
While scores of glittering bugs and flies
Dance polkas on her limbs.
I whistle symphonies of your face
And laugh for your hair so fine.
In startled greens of playground grass
A child jumps rope to rhyme.

Reeds and brass, the marching drums
Make a joyous sound
Trees bend low with nuts and plums
Then fall to find the ground.
I hunger for your porpoise mouth
And stand erect for love.
The sun burns up the winter sky
And all the earth is love.

a very poetic naturalistic love song by an artist of great sociopolitical and ecological awareness.

Album: Gypsy Cowboy by New Riders of the Purple Sage, 1972

LINDA

DID YOU SEE THE WAY THE SUNLIGHT LIT UPON THE HILLSIDES HERE THIS MORNING
DID YOU SEE ME WALKING IN THE MEADOW JUST BEFORE THE DAY WAS DAWNING
AH, DID YOU HEAR MY PEBBLES ON YOUR WINDOW
AND DID YOU HEAR ME ASKING IF YOU WOULD GO

LINDA COME ALONG WITH ME
LINDA, LINDA CAN'T YOU SEE
YOUR OLD MAN HE'S NEVER LET YOU BE
SO LINDA WON'T YOU COME ALONG WITH ME

DID YOU SEE THE RAINBOW THAT THE SUN CHASED WITH THE CLOUDS INTO THE MORNING
AND DID YOU SEE THE DEW THAT SPARKLED LIGHTLY ON THE GRASS AND THEN WAS GONE
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO LOOK AT HEAVEN
AND HAVE YOU TASTED OF YOUR CUP OF LIVING

LINDA COME ALONG WITH ME
LINDA, LINDA CAN'T YOU SEE
WELL THE DAY IS GETTING OLDER GIRL AND SO ARE WE
SO LINDA WON'T YOU COME ALONG WITH ME
AH LINDA WON'T YOU COME ALONG WITH ME

SAILIN’

OH MY LADY WALKS SOFTLY AND CARRIES NO TIME
THE SUN IN THE MORNING IS HER ONLY WINE
AND SHE WAKES ME AND TAKES ME
WITH HER TO THE SEA

OH WE OFTEN GO SAILIN’ MY LADY AND ME
LADY IS LOVELY AND CARRIES NO COMB
AND JUST BEING WITH HER IS FEELIN’ LIKE HOME
SHE THINKS OF THE OCEANS AS
RIVERS SET FREE

OH WE OFTEN GO SAILIN’ MY LADY AND ME

OH MY LADY AND ME
WE GO DOWN TO THE SEA
SUNSHINE IN THE MORNING AT DAWN
CLIMB TO THE DECK AND WE
RAISE UP THE SAILS
CLEAR THE HARBOR AND WE’RE GONE

LADY SINGS SWEETLY AND CARRIES NO TUNE
HER VOICE MAKES ME THINK OF THE LIGHT
FROM THE MOON
AND SHE WAKES ME AND TAKES ME
WITH HER TO THE SEA

OH WE OFTEN GO SAILIN’ MY LADY AND ME

three songs from this album. The two are typical love songs where lovers imagine and romance themselves in a naturalistic scene.

The other, the sutter's mill, is an interesting song about escaping from heavy urban environments to pure nature, where you can find peace of mind in the simplicity of pre-urban way of life

21st Century Show by Earth And Fire, Album: Earth And Fire, 1970

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Twenty-first century show

Marching and moaning and crying
And dying in no time
Like home-lost pigeons
And full of suspicions in their mind
Let us go to the merry-go-round
Come on now let them go
It’s the twenty-first century show
Nothing there they really need

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Twenty-first century

Neuro-surgeons are dreaming
Of more and more
They’re begging and begging
'oh please' at your door
Let us go to the merry-go-round
Observations of a fool
It’s the twentieth centuries’ fool
But he stays really cool

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Twenty-first century

Our technical friend can be
A deadly friend in the end
Will wisdom survive this
Technical friend
Your friend
Let us go to the merry-go-round
Come on to the sun
I’m glad there is one
Let it shine
Let it shine

It’s a famous progressive/psychedelic band from Holland. This song has many striking similarities with the basic concept of In the court of the Crimson King by King Crimson that we have presented some weeks ago: The anxiety and fear of a totally dominated by technology and dehumanizing future. In the end there is also a call for quest for the natural way.

Twelve dreams of Doctor Sardonicus, by Spirit, 1970

We perform 3 songs from this album

Prelude/Nothing to hide

You have the world at your fingertips;
No one can make it better than you.
You have the world at your fingertips,
But see what you've done
To the rain and the sun;
So many changes have all just begun
To reap...
I know you're asleep....
Wake Up!

Nature’s way

It's nature's way of telling you something's wrong
It's nature's way of telling you in a song
It's nature's way of receiving you
It's nature's way of retrieving you
It's nature's way of telling you
Something's wrong

It's nature's way of telling you, summer breeze
It's nature's way of telling you, dying trees
It's nature's way of receiving you
It's nature's way of retrieving you
It's nature's way of telling you
Something's wrong
It's nature's way, it's nature's way
It's nature's way, it's nature's way

It's nature's way of telling you
Something's wrong
It's nature's way of telling you
In a song, oh-h

It's nature's way of receiving you
It's nature's way
It's nature's way of retrieving you
It's nature's way
It's nature's way of telling you
Something's wrong,
something's wrong

This song is a call for listening nature’s signs and warnings either for good, or for doing wrong, in order to regulate our activities. If we act according to this very ancient advise we would not be threatened by climatic changes, ozone hole, acid rain etc and we were not living in heavy and repressive urban environments as the following song notifies:

Animal Zoo

Living in the city, I've been abused
The jobs I keep, the people I meet
Don't do more than make me amused
Everywhere I turn now, just more bad news
So don't look now and don't ask how
We're gonna find our way back to the Animal Zoo

Oh no, something went wrong
Well you're much too fat and a little too long
Hey hey, you got too much to lose
Gotta find your way back to the Animal Zoo

Looking at my body, I'm slipping down
The air I breathe, the water I drink
Is se lling me short and turning me round
Everyone I see now on their way too
So don't look now and don't ask how
We're gonna find our way back to the Animal Zoo

Oh no, something went wrong
Well you're much too fat and a little too long
Hey hey, you got too much to lose
Gotta find your way back to the Animal Zoo

Album: Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane 1969

We perform three songs from this classic album:

Eskimo blue day

Snow cuts loose from the frozen
Until it joins with the African sea
In moving it changes its cold and its name
The reason I come and go is the same

Animal game for me
You call it rain
But the human name
Doesn't mean shit to a tree

If you don't mind heat in your river and
Fork tongue talking from me
Swim like an eel fantastic snake
Take my love when it's free

Electric feel with me
You call it loud
But the human crowd
Doesn't mean shit to a tree

Change the strings and notes slide
Change the bridge and string shift down
Shift the notes and bride sings

Fire eating people
Rising toys of the sun
Energy dies without body warm
Icicles ruin your gun

Water my roots the natural thing
Natural spring to the sea
Sulphur springs make my body float
Like a ship made of logs from a tree

Redwoods talk to me
Say it plainly
The human name
Doesn't mean shit to a tree

Snow called water going violent
Damn the end of the stream
Too much cold in one place breaks
That's why you might know what I mean

Consider how small you are
Compared to your scream
The human dream
Doesn't mean shit to a tree

Describing the life of Eskimos, this song make tipps about the respect of nature. The vulgar phrase “Doesn't mean shit to a tree” that had provoked the conservative ethics of its time is a call for the human activities to be gentle with nature and protect her.

The Farm

Bought myself a farm way out in the country
Took to growin lettuce milkin cows and honey
Bought myself a farm (way out in the country)
Bought myself a farm way out in the country

Spent time in the hayloft with the mice and the bunnies
Spent time in the country
Yes it's good livin on the farm
Ah so good livin on the farm
Yes it's good livin on the farm

Here comes my next door neighbour comin down the road
He always looks so regal ridin on his toad named Lightnin
The toad's name is Lightnin he's ten hands at the shoulder
And if you give him sugar you know he'll whinny like a boulder
Yes he will
Well I gotta get back to work now and clear away some logs
Ah the sun is shinin westwards yeah I think I'll saddle up my frog and
Get outta here

This song is a vision of returning to a natural and idyllic way of life in egalitarian ecological communities, in a farm in the country, a very common theme by hippie culture and music.

Wooden ships

Black sails knifing through the pitchblende night
Away from the radioactive landmass madness
From the silver-suited people searching out
Uncontaminated food and shelter on the shores
No glowing metal on our ship of wood only
Free happy crazy people naked in the universe
WE SPEAK EARTH TALK
GO RIDE THE MUSIC

We performed this song 2 weeks ago by CSN. We put here only the introduction by Jefferson Airplane. You can hear the Jefferson Airplane version in youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC0zpuCqo_w

From Wikipedia:

The album has been seen as stereotypical of the hippie philosophy of the time with its anti-war and pro-anarchism songs. The theme of nature, communities and ecology was also explored with the songs "The Farm" and "Eskimo Blue Day". Ironically, the title track was actually inspired by a "Volunteers of America" garbage truck that awoke singer Marty Balin one morning. The album provoked even more controversy with lyrics such as "Up against the wall, motherfucker" which appeared on the opening track and "shit" which is said several times on "Eskimo Blue Day".

GARDEN OF EDEN and LAST LONELY EAGLE by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Album: New Riders of the Purple Sage 1971

HEY LOOK IN THE AIR
THERE’S SMOKE FILLIN’ EVERYWHERE
AND HEY, LOOK ON THE GROUND
THERE’S BLOOD SPILLING ALL AROUND

CHORUS:
WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING TO THE GROUND
WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING DOWN

HEY LOOK AT THE GREEN, GREEN TREE
IT AIN’T QUITE AS GREEN GREEN AS IT USED TO BE
AND HEY, LOOK AT THE COOL CLEAR WATER
IT AIN’T QUITE AS COOL AND CLEAR
AS IT OUGHT TO BE, AND

CHORUS:
WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING TO THE GROUND
WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING DOWN

HEY LOOK AT THE PEOPLE
SOMETIMES WE FORGET
THAT WE’RE JUST PEOPLE
AND WE’RE FALLING HEAD OVER HEELS
‘CAUSE ALL OF US FORGET QUITE HOW TO FEEL

WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING TO THE GROUND
WE LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, YEAH
DON’T KNOW WHY WE WANT TO TEAR
THE WHOLE THING DOWN

This song is ironic: people believe that they create gardens of Eden, but in fact they minimize nature, they pollute the air and water, and generally they affect their own lives and their piece of mind

IF YOU GO DOWN ROUND THE BEND IN THE RIVER
YOU’RE GONNA FIND A FEW CHANGES
BEEN GOING DOWN THERE
‘CAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE
ROUND THE BEND IN THE RIVER
HAVE FORGOTTEN THEIR DREAMS
AND THEY’VE CUT OFF THEIR HAIR

CHORUS:
AND TAKE A LAST, FLYING LOOK
AT THE LAST LONELY EAGLE
HE’S SOARING THE LENGTH OF THE LAND
SHED A TEAR FOR THE FATE
OF THE LAST LONELY EAGLE
FOR YOU KNOW THAT HE NEVER WILL LAND

IF YOU GO DOWN WHERE THE LIGHTS
PUSH THE NIGHTTIME
BACK FAR ENOUGH SO YOU CAN’T FEEL THE FEAR
REMEMBER THE BOY WHO YOU LEFT ON THE MOUNTAIN
WHO’S SITTING ALONE WITH THE STARS AND HIS TEARS

CHORUS

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE GAS-POWERED FLATLAND
WHERE MOST OF THE PEOPLE JUST THINK
THAT THEY’RE FREE
REMEMBER THE PEACE THAT YOU HAD
ON THE MOUNTAIN
COME BACK TO THE LOVE THAT YOU HAD HERE WITH ME

CHORUS

TAG:
FOR YOU KNOW THAT HE NEVER WILL LAND

This song is similar with the above but the singer cries for what has been lost through "civilization" and "development". The last eagle will never land on these places. It's symbolic about the loss of the natural spirit, of the indigenous people, of the pure nature. Today, we can add the threat of extincion of the endangered species that are represented by the Bald Eagle.

Poppy by Edgar Broughton Band, Album: Edgar Broughton Band, 1971

I laid on a poppy
It laid on me
A lot of thinking
And did it all for free
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wanted to swim in the river
But I saw what they had done
All the fish are dying in there
and we ain’t got no sun

I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wandered in a meadow
All that rubbish there
Look at them with the plastic picnic
Talking ‘bout the length of my hair

I laid on a poppy
It laid on me
A lot of thinking
And did it all for free
I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I wanted to swim in the river
But I saw what they had done
All the fish are dying in there
And we ain’t got no sun

I thought of you…..
I thought of you

I’m gonna take a walk in the country
Take a look at that big blue sky
Take a breath of that clean spring air
Before they say die

I thought of you…..
I thought of you

Here there is also a disapointing notice towards the disapearing Nature, polluted rivers, forests with plastic rubbish by visitors who prefer not to critisize their waste-producing way of life, but the long hairs of the true nature's childred, the hippies.

Ship of fools by Doors (Αλμπουμ: Morrison hotel 1970)

The human race was dying out.
No one left to scream and shout.
People walking on the moon.
Smog will get you pretty soon.

Everyone was hangin' out.
Hangin' up and hangin' down.
Hangin' in and holdin' fast.
Hope our little world will last.

Along came Mr. Goodtrips Looking for a new a ship.
Come on, people, better climb on board.
Come on, baby, now we're going home.
Ship of fools, ship of fools.

The human race was dying out.
No one left to scream and shout.
People walking on the moon.
Smog gonna get you pretty soon.

Ship of fools, ship of fools. Ship of fools, ship of fools.
Ship of fools, ship of fools.
Ship of fools.

Yeah, climb on board Ship's gonna leave ya far behind
Climb on board
Ship of fools
ship of fools

This song ridicules quieting ideas of indifference about earth pollution and of consequent escaping planet earth after it became unbearrable for inhabiting. The presumptuous "survivors" will be driven to nowhere as it was happened in Medieval Age when the ship of fools was o boat filled with mentally-deranged people who were shipped to open sea and to inevitable death.
