This song ridicules quieting ideas of indifference about earth pollution and of consequent escaping planet earth after it became unbearrable for inhabiting. The presumptuous "survivors" will be driven to nowhere as it was happened in Medieval Age when the ship of fools was o boat filled with mentally-deranged people who were shipped to open sea and to inevitable death.

Another quite similar interpretation of this song is that Morrison, did sarcasm with the vanity of sending people to the Moon with the space programms that were considered the peak of human progress and civilization of his season. It's nothing more than a ship of fools that carry humans to other planets, but they'll bring also their pollution to them very soon.
The solution to the pollution and degradation of life is not the changing of planet or leaving the polluted town to live in the country. We'll soon bring or recreate the same bad environment very soon. The solution is to change our way of livings make them more friendly to our biological and mental needs and to natural environment
