“I Need To Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge (2007)

Have I been sleeping?
I've been so still
Afraid of crumbling
Have I been careless?

Dismissing all the distant rumblings
Take me where I am supposed to be
To comprehend the things that I can't see
Cause I need to move

I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something's got to break up
I've been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

And as a child
I danced like it was 1999
My dreams were wild
The promise of this new world
Would be mine
Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth
To listen to an inconvenient truth
That I need to move

I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something's got to break up
I've been asleep
And I need to wake up

Now I am not an island
I am not alone
I am my intentions
Trapped here in this flesh and bone
And I need to move

I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something's got to break up
I've been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I want to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Oh, Something's got to break up
I've been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

This song has been written for the famous Al Gore’s documentary film about Global warming “An Inconvenient Truth”. It’s a call for self-obligation to take personal responsibility for fighting climate change.

“Manhattan in January” by Jill Sobule/Robin Eaton (2006)

Strolling along in central park
Everyone's out today
The daisies and dogwoods are all in bloom
Oh what a glorious day
For picnics, and Frisbees, and roller skaters
Friends and lovers and lonely sunbathers

Everyone is out and merry
Manhattan in January

I brought ice tea, did you bring the bug spray
The flies are the size of my head
Next to the palm tree, did you see the gator?
He looks happy and very well fed

Everyone's out and Merry
Manhattan in January

My preacher said, "now don't you worry"
The scientists have it all wrong
And so who cares, it's winter here
And I have my halter top on.

The surfers on Park Avenue
Avoid the old street signs
They're glad that they survived the plague.
And how the sun does shine

An ironic song about global warming, think positively, only look at the bright side of life as Monty Pythons sing. We read in TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) blog:

Like nearly everyone at TED2006, Jill Sobule was stirred by Al Gore's spectacular speech on the clear and present danger of climate change. The time for action is now, Jill thought. And so she wrote a song.

But since everyone else was so down about the impending collapse of ecological systems, which could lead to floods, drought, hurricanes, food shortages, mosquito overpopulation and species extinction (if we don't do anything to stop it), she decided to write a happy song about global warming.

And here it is. Written and performed first at TED. Recorded in Los Angeles. Al Gore loved it, and so will you: Jill Sobule's "Manhattan in January."

Woman in the window: A previously unreleased Jim Morrison's song that was used in a 2007 Global warming campaign

Woman in the Window

I am the woman
In the window
See the children
Playing

Soldier sailor
Young man on your way
To the summer
Swimming pool

Can you see me standing?
In my window
Can you see me
Laughing?

Come upstairs sir to your room and I will play for you

Oh dreamland
golden scene land
Try to sleep lamb
Take us to dreamland

I am unhappy
Far from my woman-
Just try and stop us
We’re going to Love
Just try and stop us
We’re going to love
Just try and stop us
We’re going to love

Eat at my table
She cried to the vineyard
Calling the workers
Home from the meadow

Man you are evil
Get out of my garden
Just try and stop us
We’re going to Love

Just try and stop us
We’re going to love
Cover us over
Love

Open your window
Woman of Palestine
Throw down your raiment
And cover us over

Riding the prairie
Just me and my angel-
Just try and stop us
We’re going to Love
Just try and stop us
We’re going to lov

We read in NME about this song:

Perry Farrell, John Densmore of The Doors and actor Josh Hartnett helped launch the Global Cool campaign today (January 30) at simultaneous press conferences in Los Angeles and London.

These artists join a host of others including Kasabian, The Killers, KT Tunstall and Scissor Sisters who are involved in promoting Global Cool's mission to "save the planet" by encouraging individuals to reduce their carbon emissions by 10 billion tons over 10 years.

"Global Cool is helping us make it uncool not to be green," said Densmore, who was involved in the creation of the campaign's theme song, 'Woman in the Window'.

The track features vocals from The Doors' Jim Morrison with background music recorded by Farrell's new band, Satellite Party. The song was debuted at the conference.

"We're happy to donate 'Woman in the Window' as the theme song for such an exciting project," Farrell told NME.COM.

"Jim (Morrison) saw the trouble in the world, but he knew that we guide our own destinies. And that's what we're doing. No one can stop us from saving energy, saving money and saving the planet."

Global Cool encourages individuals to reduce their energy consumption by doing simple things each day such as turning out lights, unplugging mobile phone chargers, and turning down heating by one degree.

"A little done by a lot of people adds up to a hell of a lot," said Global Cool CEO Julian Knight.

Global Cool will soon announce a series of live musical events throughout the world featuring bands such as Kasabian, Scissor Sisters and KT Tunstall to help promote energy-saving messages and further Global Cool's mission.

"What I've done" by Linkin Park, album: Minutes to Midnight (2007)

In this farewell
there's no blood
there's no alibi

coz I've drawn regret
from the truth of thousand lies
So let mercy come
and wash away

[chorus]
What I've done
I face myself
to cross-out what I've become
erase myself
and let go of what I've done

Put to rest
what you've thought of me

Well I clean this slate
with the hands of uncertainty
So let mercy come
and wash away

[chorus]
What I've done
I face myself
to cross-out what I've become
erase myself
and let go of what I've done

For what I've done
I start again
and whatever pain may come
today this ends
I’m forgiving what I've done
I face myself
to cross-out what I've become
erase myself
and let go of what I've done

What I've done

What I've done

Forgiving what I've done

Lyrics of general thematology that can be interpreted as environmental, a sudden self-awareness of oneself's personal footprint facing an environmental impact of billions of such human actions. Taking into account album title this is quite sure. The album title refers to the concept of Doomsday Clock. We read in wikipedia:

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago, that uses the analogy of the human race being at a time that is "minutes to midnight", wherein midnight represents "catastrophic destruction". Originally, the analogy represented the threat of global nuclear war, but since includes climate-changing technologies and "new developments in the life sciences and nanotechnology that could inflict irrevocable harm".

Since its inception, the clock has appeared on every cover of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Its first representation was in 1947, when magazine co-founder Hyman Goldsmith asked artist Martyl Langsdorf (wife of Manhattan Project physicist Alexander Langsdorf, Jr.) to design a cover for the magazine's June 1947 issue.

The number of minutes before midnight – measuring the degree of nuclear, environmental, and technological threats to mankind – is periodically corrected; currently, the clock reads five minutes to midnight, having advanced two minutes on 17 January 2007
The videoclip of this song has also clear environmental messages picturing a variety of circumstances that do harm to environment and humanity, as you can see it in youtube

Nunatak: A particular participation in Live Earth Concerts (2007)

Surely, the most particular event of 2007 Live Earth concerts was held in Antarctica at the Rothera research station: the audience, the scientific personnel (17 people) attended a concert of the indie rock band Nunatak who are members of the Antarctic research team too. We present the lyrics of Nunatak’s performed songs

How many people

I’ve got a plan for a revolution
I’ve got a plan to change our lives
We’ve got to end this stupid madness
We’ve got to put it all outside

In fact I shouldn’t even be here
We shouldn’t have it all inside
We’ve got to end the stupid madness
We’ve got to put it all outside

How many people feel the things we feel?
How many have slipped inside a soul?
How many people feel the things we feel?
How many have slipped inside a soul?

Lyrics are found in inel blog

Would you do it all again

Would you do it all again?
Would you do it all the same?
Would you tell the same old yarns?
Would you make the same mistakes?

Come away(x4)

The history is on the wall
Telling stories of before when we walked across the bay
Now things have changed
But the distance stays the same.

Lyrics are found in inel blog

No matter that the lyrics are of general thematology, their message is environmental for sure in the context of this global event. Also this performance was undouptedly the most environmental friendly of all the rest Live Earth concerts.

Live Earth Concerts (2007)

A series of benefit concerts started in 2007 as an annual global event for an effort to promote awareness of the consequences of the oncoming climatic change and to enhance global warming.

The first concerts held on 7th of July 2007 in various places of the earth, in every continent, even in Antarctica (!) and broadcasted all over the world in 130 countries with 500 media partners including radio, TV channels, internet, etc. In the map below we see the cities and the countries that held these events. Many celebrity mucisians took part in the USA kai European concerts like Metallica, Gennesis, Madonna, Shakira, Police, Bon Jobi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kasabian, Foo Fighters, Duran Duran, etc. In the rest Continents the majority were famous local artists. Presenters were also famous politicians and cinema celebrities like Al Gore (one of the founder of Live Earth Concerts), Leonardo DiCaprio, Peter Garret (ex-frontman of Midnight Oil), Naomi Campbell, Cameron Diaz.

The event was critisized by other rock stars like Bob Geldof , Roger Dartley from Who, Arctic Monkeys and Muse as of a useless effort that consumed too much energy and consequently too much carbon emissions in order to be organized and be held for an issue that is well known to the majority of people. Also there was no transparency concerning the profits and incomes. We read in wikipedia:

Bands including The Who, Muse and the Arctic Monkeys dubbed Live Earth "Private Jets for Climate Change."The event's total carbon footprint, including the artists' and spectators' travel and energy consumption, was probably at least 74,500 tonnes, according to John Buckley of CarbonFootPrint.com - more than 3,000 times the average Briton's annual footprint. Performers flew at least 222,623.63 miles (about 358,278 kilometres) — the equivalent of nearly nine times round the planet — to take part in the event, and this figure does not include transport of technicians, dancers and support staff. An estimate reported that 100,000 planted trees are required to offset total carbon emissions produced during the entire event, as well as a key sponsor for the event being Chevrolet, promoting a new hybrid four-wheel drive.
Next Line Earth concert will be held in only one place, Mumbai, India on 7 of December 2008. We read in wikipedia:
In choosing India for the event, Al Gore stated: "India will be among the leading powers of the global economy in the coming decades [...] as a democracy that is looked up to by many nations, especially for its commitment to inclusive growth for its diverse peoples, India has a major role to play in leadership by example for the climate crisis and sustainable development."

"To Mother Earth" by Gamma Ray, Album: Land Of The Free II (2007)

Hey, this world's a dying planet
nothing matters, nothing's won
I have come to seek revenge
for all that you have done

Hate and fear, eternal sadness
nothing matters, no one cares
I am here to stop the madness
free you from despair

Once I heard the white dove sing
it was the sound of peace
beauty dies in agony
crushed under debris

She was so beautiful
she was a dream
and when I cry for her
I hear them scream..

No respect, no heart for nature
led by greed they tear our soil
ripped, the sky, the damage major
the air is at the boil

Here create another wasteland
on and on 'til nothing's there
here it comes, the devastation
poisoning the air

Once I saw the eagle fly
it was the sound of peace
beauty dies in agony
crushed under debris

She was so beautiful
she was a dream
and when I cry for her
I hear them scream..

You were so beautiful
you were a dream
all we shall heed the call
shall be redeemed

She was so beautiful
she was a dream
and when I cry for her
I hear them scream..
Oh Mother Earth
You were so beautiful
just like a dream
all we shall heed the call
shall be redeemed
Yeah!

Album: “The Eraser” by Thom Yorke (2006)

Analyse

A self-fulfilling prophecy of endless possibility
You roll in reams across the street
In algebra, in algebra

The fences that you cannot climb
The sentences that do not rhyme
In all that you can ever change
The one you're looking for

It gets you down
It gets you down
There's no spark
No light in the dark
It gets you down
It gets you down
You traveled far
What have you found
That there's no time
There's no time
To analyse
To think things through
To make sense

Like cows in the city, they never looked so pretty
By power carts and blackouts
Sleeping like babies

It gets you down
It gets you down
You're just playing a part
You're just playing a part
You're playing a part
Playing a part
And there's no time
There's no time
To analyse

The Clock

Time is running out for us
But you just move the hands upon the clock
You throw coins in the wishing well
For us
You just move your hands upon the wall

It comes to you begging you to stop
Wake up
But you just move your hands upon the clock
Throw coins in the wishing well
For us
You make believe that you are still in charge

and it rained all night

and it rained all night and washed the filth away
down new york airconditioned drains,
the click click clack of the heavy black trains,
a million engines in neutral.
the tick tock tick of a ticking time bomb
50 ft of concrete underground,
one little leak becomes a lake says the
tiny voice in my ear piece.
so i give in to the rhythm, the click click clack.
im too wasted to fight back
tick tock goes the pendulum on the old grandfather clock
i... i ca see but i can never reach you
and it rained all night and then all day,
the drops were the size of your hands and face,
the worms come out to see what's up.
we pull the car up from the river.
its relentless
invisible
indefatigable
indisputable
undeniable
so how come it looks so beautiful?
how come the moon falls from the sky?
can see you, but i can never reach you
i can see you but i can never reach you

Obscured lyrics that seem not to deal with global warming in a dedicated to the oncoming climatic change, as Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has stated. We post some lyrics that can be interpreted freely as having somewhat to do with human reactions facing oncoming troubles or disasters. We read in wikipedia about Thom Yorke’s statements for his debut solo work:

Thom Yorke said much of his songwriting on the album was personal, but also inspired by the issue of climate change. Yorke was a spokesman for Friends of the Earth's "The Big Ask" campaign to reduce carbon emissions, and Radiohead played the first gig of their 2006 tour at a benefit for the group (performing "Cymbal Rush" before the album was announced).

In describing his motivation for releasing the album, Yorke said, "I've been in the band since we left school and never dared do anything on my own, and it was like, 'This is getting stupid.' It was like, 'Man, I've got to find out what it feels like,' you know? And it was good. It was a really good time."

"Atoms for Peace" was the title of a speech given by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. It is also the motto of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Harrowdown Hill in Oxfordshire is notable for being the place where the body of biological warfare expert Dr David Kelly was found in 2003. His evidence had raised questions about Saddam Hussein's possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction — the official justification for the UK government's decision to invade Iraq. The homonymous song was written about David Kelly who, as a matter of some contention, committed suicide in 2003. However, there is speculation that he was murdered, as demonstrated in the song. Thom Yorke himself confirmed the song's meaning in several interviews.

The album's cover, a linocut by Stanley Donwood, depicts a figure in black hat and trenchcoat standing in imitation of King Canute, trying and failing to command the ocean. Around him are iconic London buildings that have been swept away by the Thames, including the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament and the Thames Barrier. Donwood included this picture and other images seen in The Eraser booklet in his art exhibition London Views, prior to the album's release. The images were inspired by a large flood Donwood and Yorke both witnessed in Cornwal in 2004.

The CD packaging of The Eraser is unusual for a high profile release in that it is made of cardboard but unlike a digipak, it does not contain any plastic. However, Yorke said in an interview that he did not have his CDs certified as carbon neutral.

“This Wonderful World” by A.C.T., Album: Silence (2006)

Do you know who you are?
Will your deeds affect your conscience?
Are you thinking with your heart?
Or does your mind have the influence?

Now it's time for a change
You've heard it all before
Now stop this retardation!

Pollution in the seas
Too hot cause global warning
Tap water will soon cease
Keep your mouth shut
While you're showering

At first, tiny things
A gradual increasing
A mother nature's vengeance

This wonderful world, on edge of falling
Our wonderful earth, there's no point of denying
This wonderful world, on edge of falling
Our great blue earth, it's crying and it's dying

Molested as a child
Brought up to be a badass
Can we blame them for their faults?
When they've been hurt as he has
A ragged screaming man
Proclaiming Armageddon
- Beware the end is coming!

This wonderful world...

Now you think I will tell you which way to go
The answers that I keep probably won't show
But I have learned that every effort counts

This wonderful world...

A call to rethink our way of living that has destructive impacts to environment and to see deep in ourselves to understand and controll our motives to act like this.

Forsaken world
Hail storms and volcano
Tidal waves at coastal lines
Forsaken world

We guarantee the judgement day is coming
Mankind is blocked and nature's shocked
Weather out of control
Ruins under burning skies
Plus many souvenirs to buy!

[Chorus]

Welcome my friend

Book your own hip disaster trip
To greenhouse planet earth
Hurricane-havoc live!
We'll drop you in, watch millions die!

An ironic song about the oncoming environmental destruction and global warming. People sunk in greed use the uncontrolled natural disasters as profitable spectacles and touristic attractions. Such a possibility is not far from reality, because climatic changes and extreme weather phenomena unfortunately hit mainly Third World Countries and Western World is expected to be affected quite later, so there is some time left for some new profitable business, something that actually happened in New Orleans disaster . Or maybe we’ll become altogether spectacles and tourist attractions in a turbulent biosphere created by climate change for fictitious extraterrestrial visitors from another world who also don’t have moral inhibitions to exploit everything for greed.

Wolves in the Throne Room: When Black Metal deals with noble ideas

Album: Diadem of 12 stars (2006)

(A Shimmering Radiance) Diadem of 12 Stars

The strength that resides in contemplation
Bathes me in silver starlight
I will lead this beast on a chain of flowers
Fear not the Jaws that devour soul

Between two pillars I have sat
Great oxen in the periphery
I ride in full course swift
Through the dark night and the rain pours down
You are a daughter of heaven
12 stars circle your brow
But you do not see them and the rain pours down
Our time in this garden is past

A very interesting evolution in thematology of the notorious Black Metal scene: Misanthropy, pervasive bloody violence, church burning, satanism, nazism have nothing to do with Wolves in the Throne Room either in their lyrics or in their personal life. We read in All music about their above debute album and the above very interesting song:

…the trio is not your everyday, pagan-worshipping, blood-sucking, corpse-paint-donning black metal band, either; but rather residents of a self-sufficient commune situated outside of Olympia, WA, where frugal living conditions help dictate the band's focus on music...
Ultimately, the music's desolate ambiance is arguably taken to extremis on the 20-minute title track, which, with its additional neo-folk elements, atmospheric quiet passages, and eerie female voices decrying lyrics about mankind's lost affinity with nature, evokes almost palpable visions of cryptic pagan rituals.

Album: Two hunters (2007)

Vastness and Sorrow

Behold the vastness and sorrow of this empty land
A dark and Fell Rider clad in garments of shadow Is the lord of this place
A cruel and wonton king, A priest of a black religion is he

The hoof beat of the rider's steed pound a mournful drumbeat upon the dry cracked earth
To this rhythm the world moves

The sun blasts down upon the earth
Until the soil turns to powder and blows away

Lifeless chaos is the order for the rider has mastered the seasons
Ancient kings Cairn now have been defiled
The gates of strongholds long breached left swinging lifelessly in the fetid wind
The pillars of holy places lie dead
He rides day and night
The relentless Hoof beats echoes

Cleansing

Yes, to the darkest place that we know
Outside of the rider's domain
To the heart of the wood
To the hidden places beyond the briar thickets

The dance must begin as dusk gathers around

Our skin drum and rattle
know the tune
jaw bone driven through
the skull of a great foe
bested with wooden spear
the tip hardened in fire

Bathe in the clear cold stream
Fresh water from the unsullied endless spring that flows from the
mountain
We will sing the most ancient song
Spark the fire upon dry tinder

The dance must begin as dusk gathers around

Our skin drum and rattle
know the tune
jaw bone driven through
the skull of a great foe
bested with wooden spear
the tip hardened in fire

I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots

The torment has ended
the beast has done his work
Great fires rage outside of this wooded sanctuary

But soon they will be quenched by a purifying rain
the embers of the ceremonial fire burn to ash

A new warmth stirs within the center of the earth
I am alone here no more

The wood is filled with the sounds of wildness
The songs of birds fill the forest on this new morning
This will be my new home
Deep within the most sacred grove
the sun god is born anew

I will lay down my bones among the rocks and roots of the deepest
hollow next to the streambed
The quiet hum of the earth's dreaming is my new song

When I awake, the world will be born anew

More information about this distinctive band and their personal ecological occupations and environmental activism:
We read in Encyclopedia metallum
The band’s ideology is quite different from many Black Metal bands. In interviews Wolves in the Throne Room have shown respect for left wing politics, radical environmentalism and eco feminism.
We read in Wikipedia
In an interview, Nathan Weaver says that he conceived the vision for the band and wrote the first two songs “Wolves in the Throne Room” and “Black Tea” at an Earth First! rendezvous in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in 2002. The band has often performed outdoors and has expressed support for radical environmentalism.
The band is well known for their eco-spiritual vision, which they consider to be a step beyond the vision offered by satanic, fascistic and nihilistic black metal. They often state that traditional black metal should be seen as a jumping-off point in a process of continual spiritual growth, and not an end unto itself.
Aaron and his wife farm the land at Calliope, the band’s stronghold. Aaron has often expressed interest in biodynamic agriculture and the teachings of Rudolf Steiner.
The band has expressed bemusement at the myths that have sprung up around Aaron and Nathan’s rural lifestyle. It is often said that WITTR live “in a one room cabin in the woods with no contact with the outside world”. Aaron has tried to set the record straight in interviews: “We don’t live in caves and wear un-tanned animal hides”

VERTIGO by Disappear Fear, Album: Echo my call (2005)

The grossest understatement of the year.
Two thousand people melt cause our hearts are made of fear.
We built empires of money mania design.
Now they expire, cause we live in a coffin of Time...
Life could be simple...Life could be simple.

Why don't we all fall down when the earth spins round?
Cause we're wrapped up tight in alibis.
Why don't we all fall down when the earth spins round?
Cause we mistake lies for good advice.

I'd like to tell you a tenth of what i feel
I'm busy sleeping on your magnetic wheel.
The main league of scientists are talking till
They're blue in the face.
They gave the world a clock...
three seconds are what we've got
To run out of human race...run out of human race.

If we lived our lives like we had three more seconds to live...
they be no question just give and give
and give and give and give and give
and give and give and give and...

“Tables and chairs” by Andrew Bird's Bowl Of Fire Album: Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs (2005)

if we can call them friends then we can call them on their telephones
and they won't pretend that they're too busy or that they're not alone
and if we can call them friends then we can call
holler at them down these hallowed halls
just don't let the human factor fail to be a factor at all

don't, don't you worry, about the atmosphere
or any sudden pressure change
cause i know
that it's starting to get warm in here
and things are starting to get strange

and did you, did you see how all of our friends were there
and they're drinking roses from the can?
and how, how i wish i, i had talked to them,
and i wish they fit into the plan

and we were tired of being mild
we were so tired of being mild
and we were tired...

i know we're going to meet some day
in the crumbled financial institutions of this land
there will be tables and chairs
there'll be pony rides and dancing bears
there'll even be a band
cause listen, after the fall there will be no more countries
no currencies at all, we're gonna live on our wits
we're gonna throw away survival kits,
trade butterfly-knives for adderal
and that's not all
ooh-ooh, there will be snacks there will
there will be snacks, there will be snacks.

and we were tired of being mild,
we were so tired of being mild,
and we were (we were so) tired...

so don't you, don't you worry
about the atmosphere

“Island” by New Model Army, Album: Carnival (2005)

The wind blows keen across the ridge
Black against a charcoal grey
We climb up here by the winding path made so long ago
In the valley below the last few lights
glow just like the embers of a fire
We begin to remember, we begin to remember

We came by the sea and we took the land
We spread out across the plains
And on and on to the mountains
Until there was nothing left to conquer
The sound of chopping trees echoed through the woods
We built the ships and the houses
and the bridges and the fortifications
Until there was nothing left to build with
Now in the silver grey dome of the sky
The birds fly home for winter
And we all come down to the shore and stare across the waves
We've got to get off the island

We carved monuments to the angry gods
We hauled stone across the deserts of our own making
From the standing stones to the villages
To the shining palaces looking out over the water
The soil is growing thin, the yield running low
There's too many of us here, too many of us here
And now ragged ribbons of rain sweep in
As the birds fly home for winter
And we all come down to the shore and stare across the waves
We've got to get off the island.

Great lyrics describing the decline of a human society because of improvident and non sustainable exploitation of nature in an environment with restricted natural sources. Probably the song refers to one of the most famous of such historical events: The decline of civilization in Easter Island in the middle of Pacific Ocean.

We read in wikipedia:

The history of Easter Island is rich and controversial. Its inhabitants have endured famines, epidemics, civil war, slave raids and colonialism, and the crash of their ecosystem; their population has declined precipitously more than once.
Easter Island, and analysis of previous radiocarbon dates imply that the island was colonized late, about 1200 CE. Significant ecological impacts and major cultural investments in monumental architecture and statuary thus began soon after initial settlement.”
"The overall picture for Easter is the most extreme example of forest destruction in the Pacific, and among the most extreme in the world: the whole forest gone, and all of its tree species extinct."
Trees are sparse on modern Easter Island, rarely forming small groves. The island once had a forest of palms, and it has generally been thought that native Easter Islanders deforested the island in the process of erecting their statues.
Jared Diamond gives an extensive look into the collapse of the ancient Easter Islanders in his book Collapse. The disappearance of the island's trees seems to coincide with a decline of its civilization around the 17th and 18th century. Midden contents show a sudden drop in quantities of fish and bird bones as the islanders lost the means to construct fishing vessels and the birds lost their nesting sites. Soil erosion due to lack of trees is apparent in some places. Sediment samples document that up to half of the native plants had become extinct and that the vegetation of the island was drastically altered. Chickens and rats became leading items of diet and there are contested hints that cannibalism occurred, based on human remains associated with cooking sites, especially in caves.
By the end of the third epoch in the island's history, with only one "long-ear" surviving, there were more than a thousand moai (stone statues), which was one for every ten islanders (Wright, 2004). When the Europeans arrived in the 18th century, the worst was over and they only found one or two living souls per statue.
Easter Island has suffered from heavy soil erosion in recent centuries, perhaps aggravated by agriculture and massive deforestation. This process seems to have been gradual and may have been aggravated by extensive sheep farming throughout most of the 20th century. Jakob Roggeveen reported that Easter Island was exceptionally fertile. "Fowls are the only animals they keep. They cultivate bananas, sugar cane, and above all sweet potatoes." In 1786 M. de La Pérouse visited Easter Island and his gardener declared that "three days' work a year" would be enough to support the population.
Also, Jared Diamonds wonders in his book “Collapse”: If some thousands of primitive Polynesians in Easter Island were enough to destroy their environment and finally their society only by using stone tools and their muscles, what about the modern humans of 6 billion with such an advanced technology? The parallelism is striking: An isolated island in the ocean, an isolated planet in space, no place to run, no place to seek for help when total crisis will strike. Easter Island is the best example of a society that has been self-destructed by extreme exploitation of its natural sources.

"GLOBAL WARMING" by REBECCA F. (2005)

Landslides in L.A., a deluge of rain
pours on the land like it's filling a drain.
Snow covers Colorado two feet high,
the Minister of Truth said "It's been a wild summer."
But it's October 15!

Floods all along the Jersey coast,
Massachusetts dams, damn near broke.
Monster hurricanes every nine days.
The weatherman says, "Well that's just the way it goes."
But in the Arctic Sea the temperature grows!

CHORUS
Don't you know there's no such thing as global warming?
The air temperature rises five degrees every day!
All the ice caps melting are just a dream!
So don't believe the facts you read, they don't prove a thing!

I got a plant box on my balcony,
the flowers are annuals:
they're supposed to croak in spring.
But every damn winter they survive,
so by the summer they're still alive!
Though the label says in frost they die!
As bird flu spreads across the sky!
And people live now till they're 85!
And plastics waste in junkyards miles high!
And we don't got a plan for all the survivors!
And no one penalizes SUV drivers!
But the louder we scream seems the more the beehivers
walk on city streets with their goddamn blinders!

An interesting song that focuses in simple observations for evidence of climate change in everyday life besides scientific proof and not be misled by the fraud reassurances of the “deniers” of global warming.

Album: “Third World Genocide” by Nuclear Assault (2005)

Third World Genocide

They come to rule and not by chance
Aided by a bloodied lance
No elections needed here
Such things mundane are not their way
A thousand rivals lying dead
And their families starved, decayed
No relief by foreign aid
A poisoned dagger is their way

Government by those who kill
And then collect from U.N. tills
They live on aid and ask for more
When all it does is pay for way

So carefree
Your killing spree
I must be blind I can't see
Tell me what is human life worth

The skies cry bloody tears

A dramatic description of the situation in a third world country. Dictatorships, coup d etat, mass assassinations, violent guerrillas, pain, diseases, starvation and survival through foreign pittance as help.

Eroded Liberty

Welcome to the age of an American empire
Not a day will pass when bombs don't seem to fly
Scream about the rights of victims and their pain
But your actions are where the causes lay

Don't like what we have done - we're not the only ones
before you raise you rage - look closely at your past

Algeria and Viet Nam - Africa the Middle East
English ships and the slave trade - now tell me who's the beast

European leaders wringing their own hands
Set aside as powers in the holy land
To Europe we are lacking in sophistication
Are we another shitty little country

Don't like we have done - we're not the only ones
Before you raise your rage - look closely at your past

South East Asia and India
Aztec Mayan and Incan worlds
Chinese hooked an opium
Sacrificed for the old world ways

Belief in their empire covers them in cloth
Forget their powers and morals for the part
History shows us this has always been our harm
When we put up with this and the UN in charge

Don't like we have done - we're not the only ones
Before you raise your rage - look closely at your past

America your enemy
To heal your leaders tell
But for your own demands
You need our power as well

USA is the bloodied imperium today and such a blame is of course fair, but “he who is sinless let him first cast the stone”. Historically, European countries have also created extreme bloodied imperia and sent conquerors all over the world and in American natives. Certain socio-political circumstances raise certain imperia and of course no common people is guilty for it in the past.
In reality, all people are responsible for their today world situation but to the extent that they give their consent or support certain policies and re-elect war supporters leaders, and for
big fluctuations and hypocrisy in their attitudes towards a powerful country when they are going to receive any kind of help (economical, political, etc) from this country.
Thus, political slogans like “Americans! People’s Murderers!” that cried out in Europe and also literally blame all people with American citizenship for collective responsibility are blameworthy in any way. There is also the “Other” America, that of social, anti-war and anti-G8/WTO movements and ecological activism.

"Master Race" by New Model Army, Album: The Ghost of Cain (1986)

Well we all learned how to use a fork and knife
How sometimes we have to wear a suit and tie
And understand these things are what give us this right
To go around the world acting superior

We live with missiles and the armaments cash
With rewritten histories and a fictional past
And though some of us still have questions to ask
The ship she sails without a captain

Goddam this master race
that we're born in
Goddam this howling wolf
that we're serving

I've had it up to here...
The opposition, we ain't doing so well
Our understanding is weak and our knowledge is small
And though kids scrawl frustration on the back street wall

Most of them can't even spell bastard
Goddam this master race/that we're born in
Goddam this howling wolf/that we're serving

Sometimes all I know is that cold wind blows
Down the valley from the mountain snows
On these muggy nights I lie awake
waiting for the thunder and the skies to break

But they are god and they are strong
And the can name the right and the wrong
And they reclaim the things they own
They call us now...

So candy please forgive these things that I've done
When the master race calls I know sometime that I run
And you mean more to me now than you ever did before
As I try to stay away from their clutches

Goddam this master race/that we're born in
Goddam this howling wolf/that we're serving

The master race, those who think they give answers to and controll everything, who decides that we can spend billions of euros to walk to the Moon, visiting distant planets and verify or falsify theories that has no meaning to the majority of us in a time when global environmental and social problems seems to get exploded. The song-writter condemns this master race, but also feels guilty as being a part of it. Not bonded by blood of course, but probably as born in and being part of the machinery either by giving consent or by supporting it with work, submission and consuming. The song has been covered also by Skyclad, one of the most characteristic environmental rock bands.

“Hot Zoo” by Adrian Belew, album: Mr Music head (1989)

Pay here
Chimpanzee
Don't park
Under the aviary
Walk through heatwave afternoon fast food hot zoo

Do the shuffle to the buffalo
See the mad monkey by the lonely pay phone
Let's go fishin' in the air conditioned dark
Man, look at the bite on that great big bark

Waste here
Souvenir land
Don't feed
Nobody your hand
Rest room photograph pachyderm cat house hot zoo

Three sleepy zebra in their living room suits
Joke with a crazy cockatoo
Big giraffe in their injured party hats say
”are you gonna watch our customary nap?”

Eat here
A dinosaur egg
Don't touch
The tarantula legs
March like army ants itchin' for a px
Hot zoo

I dig iguana in their outer space duds
Sayin' “aren't you glad we only eat bugs?”
Closing time, quick! close those gates
Capture a few of these human apes

Exit here
Kangaroo
Don't forget
To come back soon

A song about an afternoon in the zoo. Considering previous animal welfare songs by Andrian Belew (in this album there is also an instrumental song named "Cruelty to animals") we think that this song is ironic by criticizing the practice of keeping wild animals in cage, away from their habitats and their free way of life as a spectacle for human curiosity, recreation and pleasure ground, superiority feeling and of course an income for the owner.

“Vapor trails” by Rush, album: Vapor trails (2001)

Stratospheric traces of our transitory flight
Trails of condensation held
In narrow paths of white
The sun is turning black
The world is turning gray
All the stars fade from the night
The oceans drain away

Horizon to horizon
Memory written on the wind
Fading away like an hourglass, grain by grain
Swept away like voices in a hurricane

In a vapor trail

Atmospheric phases make the transitory last
Vaporize the memories that freeze the fading past
Silence all the song birds
Stilled by the killing frost
Forests burn to ashes
Everything is lost

Washed away like footprints in the rain
In a vapor trail

Obscured lyrics that can be interpreted as dealing with atmospheric pollution. Vapor trails are condensed water vapors upon particles emitted from the exhaust of airplane engines, when certain atmospheric conditions allows such a phenomenon. These fuel emissions, invisible in other way, destroy ozone layer and enhance global warming, especially today when air transportations are steadily increased. There are also many studies that support an impact of vapor trails themselves to climatic change, acting as back-to-Earth reflecting surfaces of thermal radiation as we read in wikipedia:

Vapor trails or contrails, by affecting the Earth's radiation balance, act as a radiative forcing. Studies have found that vapour trails or contrails trap outgoing longwave radiation emitted by the Earth and atmosphere (positive radiative forcing) at a greater rate than they reflect incoming solar radiation (negative radiative forcing). Therefore, the overall net effect of contrails is positive, i.e. a warming. However, the effect varies daily and annually, and overall the magnitude of the forcing is not well known: globally (for 1992 air traffic conditions), values range from 3.5 mW/m² to 17 mW/m². Other studies have determined that night flights are most responsible for the warming effect: while accounting for only 25% of daily air traffic, they contribute 60 to 80% of contrail radiative forcing. Similarly, winter flights account for only 22% of annual air traffic, but contribute half of the annual mean radiative forcing.
The grounding of planes for three days in the United States after September 11, 2001 provided a rare opportunity for scientists to study the effects of contrails on climate forcing. Measurements showed that without contrails, the local diurnal temperature range (difference of day and night temperatures) was about 1 degree Celsius higher than immediately before; however, it has also been suggested that this was due to unusually clear weather during the period.

There is also a conspiracy theory that certain types of vapor trails are toxic chemicals spread in the atmosphere for some secret unindentified evil purposes, the so called chemtrails. In some cases they are some chemical agents for weather control, but the majority of all these theories seem to be implausible.

“Underground” by Wishbone Ash, album: Number the brave (1981)

Underground,
They want us to go underground.
Underground,
They want us to go underground.
You’ve got the right,
You’ve got the right to say what you think
You’ve got to fight,
’cause they’re leading us to the brink.

Fireball,
There’s going to be a fireball.
Fireball,
There’s going to be a fireball.
Never a time,
Never a time like this before.
There won’t be a sign,
There was never a time like this before.

Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh (repeat four times)

Underground,
They want us to go underground.
Underground,
They want us to go underground.
Throw down a line,
You’ve got the right to stay alive.
You’ve got to fight,
You’ve got to fight to survive.

We can interprete this song as a call to take action as soon as possible against the environmental destruction politicians and corporations are leading us to. Maybe the impacts will be so sudden as a fireball crushing, so we souldn't stay inactive and wait anymore.

Album: “Supernova” by Liquid Blue (2004)

Supernova

Population overload,
treading in a fragile zone
Ozone layer disappearing,
predictions that the end is nearing

Time to take a little ride,
faster than the speed of light
Visiting new solar systems,
to find a place we can exist in

Bossa Supernova, bossa supernova,
dancing on a shrinking planet
Doing the bossa Supernova, oh yeah

Rain forests are getting thin,
roads and houses built within
Scientists say take some action,
politicians no reaction

Six billion faces crowded in,
earth resources growing thin
One third of people unemployed,
animal species being destroyed

Pollution in our lakes and streams,
pollution is in everything
Gotta catch a ship to Mars
or somewhere out beyond the star

A very beautiful song that counts the major environmental problems that threat planet Earth and consequently all of us and points people's indifference. They ironically propose to abandon Earth and fly to another planets. Of course such a perspective is foolish from many reasons, the most serious is that if that would become possible in near future, we’ll simply destroy the new habitat because we’ll also carry with us our greedy minds and destructive attitudes.

Rescue

Clear water dreams,
seems like a memory fading slowly
Warning signs on the beach,
it’s just another day here in paradise lost (lost)

When, will the tides turn,
and can we ever learn,
or here we go again

I can’t believe that we’re turning away,
Leaving this debt for the children to pay
What used to be wild, it was simple and clean
When will we rescue, the sea

Blue and the green,
that sand of white and the sunshine baby
Colors pristine,
but fading fast as we move into darkness lately

When, will the tides turn,
and can we ever learn,
or here we go again

When will we rescue,
When will we rescue, the sea
I can’t fight this feeling growing stronger everyday
We all share the same planet anyways

When, will the tides turn,
and can we ever learn,
or here we go again

I hope we can find,
those magic words that could change their minds

Another call for environmental awareness. This band is quite interesting because it combines mainstream dance music with sociopolitical and ecological issues.

We read in wikipedia about this band:

Liquid Blue is an American indie pop rock band formed in San Diego, California in 1996 by Scott Stephens & Michael Vangerov. The group holds the official world record as “the most traveled band”, having performed in 100 countries on six continents ”, and are more popular in parts of Asia and Europe than in their home c...ountry (USA). The band was "certified green" by the County of San Diego in May 2009. The group’s use of Eastern Indian instruments (tabla, sitar, kanun) and scales are unique in pop music with Liquid Blue being one of the first groups to record an entire album blending East Indian music with western pop/rock. Liquid Blue’s somewhat limited number of recordings all contain “socially conscious” lyrics as primary songwriter Scott Stephens refuses to write any human love songs. The band seems to be on a permanent tour and has been criticized for not spending more time at home writing and recording. Tracks from their highly acclaimed debut album, Supernova, have been included on 20 separate compilation CD’s.

“Creek Mary's Blood” by Nightwish, Album: Once (2004)

Soon I will be here no more
You'll hear my tale
Through my blood
Through my people
And the eagle's cry
The bear within will never lay to rest

Wandering on Horizon Road
Following the trail of tears

White man came
Saw the blessed land
We cared, you took
You fought, we lost
Not the war but an unfair fight
Sceneries painted beautiful in blood

Wandering on Horizon Road
Following the trail of tears
Once we were here
Where we have lived since the world began
Since time itself gave us this land

Our souls will join again the wild
Our home in peace 'n war 'n death

Wandering on Horizon Road
Following the trail of tears
Once we were here
Where we have lived since the world began
Since time itself gave us this land

Translation:
"I still dream every night
Of them wolves, them mustangs, those endless prairies
The restless winds over mountaintops
The unspoilt frontier of my kith n`kin
The hallowed land of the Great Spirit
I still believe
In every night
In every day
I am like the caribou
And you like the wolves that make me stronger
We never owed you anything
Our only debt is one life for our Mother
It was a good day to chant this song
For Her
Our spirit was here long before you
Long before us
And long will it be after your pride brings you to your end"

Another song about the elimination of Indians in America by the white invaders and the degradation of culture and life of their remnants. Sung in native language the rest of the song is a lament by an elder Indian of what has been lost and been spread from mouth to mouth through the survived generations with the hope for a future salvation by returning again to their roots.
The song is inspired by the homonymous historical novel based on true events by Dee Brown which is refered to the adventures of an Indian woman and generally the Creek Nation. We read in Amazon.com a customer’s review about this novel:

This novel concerns Mary Musgrove who was the Creek wife of John Musgrove, an Indian Trader who had a trading post near the Savannah River when Oglethorpe brought the first settlers to Georgia in 1731. After Mary's husband was killed, she was eventually forced to abandon her home and people. The novel sets out the problems she encountered and follows her children (Mary's Blood) on the trail of tears westward and ends up with some of her decendants involved in the battle of Little Big Horn. This novel transports the reader into the person of Mary Musgrove and allows us to feel the pains endured by the natives of this country during a period of disgraceful acts committed by some of our forefathers in the name of patriotism.

“PROBOT” a project by Dave Grohl (2004)

"Silent Spring", vocalist: Kurt Brecht (DRI)

They ravaged the land
And polluted the seas
They burned all the forests
Or cut down the trees

They damned up the rivers
And paved all the shores
Built parking lots
And discount stores

Then they started to die
But not fast enough
So, they shot at each other
With bullets and stuff

Chalk it all up to human greed
As seen on your TV

So much cruelty and madness
In these days of despair
That's not the way that i am, no
That's not the way that i am

As the earth gets sicker and sicker
A soldier aims and pulls the trigger
Angels cry and demons laugh
Another suicide bomb blood bath

Silent spring - no birds sing
Angels cry - we all die

Mother earth wept
As they tore off her dress
Heart broken, humiliated
In a state of distress

They ripped out her hair
And they scratched at her skin
Drained her of her fluids
Then committed their sin

They gouged out her eyes
And cauterized her womb
They sealed up her mouth
And made her a tomb

Now she lies still
At the mercy of man
I whisper in her ear

"that's not the way that i am"
No that's not the way that i am
No that's not the way that i am
No that's not the way that i am
No that's not the way that i am

Strong feelings about human greed and violence. Planet suffers a lot by pollution, but people make the matter worse with conflicts and wars instead of rethinking their way of life. Earth was presented as raped and slaughtered woman/mother by her maniacs sprouts, but the singer is not one of them but he feels isolated and unable to help her, and the only thing that he can do is to express her his compassion and sorrow in secret. The song title was taken from the classic novel "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson that was one of the most influential to the rise of ecological and environmental awareness and related movements.

"Ice Cold Man", vocalist: Lee Dorrian (Cathedral, Napalm Death, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine)

Vampires of this earth hungry dying of thirst
Lifeblood in short supply
Black skies red watching eye
Burning into demise
As all light slowly dies
Seeds of man's decay have
Grown to take away
The sacred gift of life

Mother nature cries as
Darkness fills her eyes
Yes we are blind, too blind to see
Our tombstone destiny

Ice cold man watches earth die
Eternal winter takes its reign
Devoid of light filled with pain

Ice cold man watches earth die
Bleak the atmosphere
Freeing warmest tears

The earth a ball of ice
Bodies frozen cold glacier heart and soul
All warmth has long since died
In his arctic hearse man rides death universe
For one final time through black frosted sun
Into oblivion

Ice cold man watches earth die
Eternal winter takes its reign
Devoid of light filled with pain

Ice cold man watches earth die
Beneath a veil of black ice
He sees now hell once paradise

Ice cold man watches earth die
All love lost - lost without a trace
Behind his - frozen empty face
Defunct eyes - cold as arctic ice

Ice cold man...pays the final price
Ice cold man...watched the earth die
Ice cold man...ice cold man....

In his arctic hears man rides death universe
One final time through black frosted sun
Into oblivion

Ice cold man watched his earth die...

A lament for the environmental destruction caused by human actions and greed. The result (A human-caused Ice Age) is rather a metaphor and personnal interpretation about the oncoming destruction inspired by scenarios of nuclear winter after a nuclear warfare, or by fictitious blockade of sunlight by extensive air pollution than a scientific forecast based on todays climatic data which forsees rather a global warming than a global freezing.

“Genetic Overkill” by Tankard, Album: Beast of Bourbon, (2004)

You make me angry
With all those filthy lies
"For mankind beneficial"
Is what you always say

Greedy to the backbone
Blessed be biotechnology
Consequences unknown
Money for the mega-companies
Thank you for the "false" food
Cool, that we can be your guinea-pigs

Genetic Overkill - eat shit
We all will pay the bill - legal damaged health
Genetic Overkill - that's sick
We all will pay the bill - to increase their wealth

Hey, ruthless Monsanto
Your Third World homicide
Controls them, exploits them
With crops and pesticides

Sanctions for Europe
That's what Bush has to say
But we don't want those products
Almighty U.S.A.

Greedy to the backbone
Blessed be biotechnology
Consequences unknown
Money for the mega-companies
Thank you for the "false" food
Cool, that we can be your guinea-pigs

Genetic Overkill - eat shit
We all will pay the bill - legal damaged health
Genetic Overkill - that's sick
We all will pay the bill - to increase their wealth

Another surprise from a band that isn’t enough famous for their social and environmental awareness. Outspoken lyrics that take no prisoners about the issue of GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) colossal multinational corporations, like Monsanto, try to release to environment, agriculture and food market all over the world in order to control world food production for more profits, disregarding probable irreversible consequences and impacts to environment, public health, social and economic automomy of Third World small local economies and no matter the independent scientists’ warnings about serious evidence for such risks: Allergy in humans, health hazards to animals fed with GMO, uncontrolled release and mixing GMO with conventional food, etc

Album: “Roorback” by Sepultura (2003)

Urge

Revolting manner of handling power
Perpetrating lies and misery
Fifty years of progress in five
People living only to survive

The child is suffering a mother's deadly dream
I'm fed up to see them being mistreated
I'm always feeling like i'm being cheated
No honest meanings the way i'm treated

Multi racial society
Degradation of liberty
Urban warfare at all levels
Politicians rethinking his measures

I'm deep inside
A sea of mud
The underground
South of the world

Can't control my urge
Rule my urge
Can't control my urge
Ruled by urge

Between the shacks and arid soil
The concrete jungle with trees of steel
Between the millions confronting faces
Confusing crowds with distant traces

Soldiers out there drug dealing
Warriors of the raw feelings
Side line control trespassing over
Dictating rules and committing the crimes

I'm deep inside
A sea of mud
The underground
South of the world

Can't control my urge
Rule my urge
Can't control my urge
Ruled by urge

Pictures of life in a third world country: Huge antithesis of social classes, social violence, poverty, drugs, children’s deaths, favellas beside concrete skyscrapers, loss of human rights, dignity and security.

Activist

Our pulse to resist
Moves our cultural resistance
I'm living this life
Inside a civil tribe demised
Improve my old mind
Breaking all rules absorbing what I may find

Our manner to protect
Destroys what's left for protection
Believing in symbols
The church will fool our souls
Prove you my role
Acting against undesired control

Don't fear your left
Don't trust your right
Activist

Our way of seeing progress
Making us walk towards repression
Disturbing our peace
In the name of self defense
Being felt by all
Our violent taste for the humans fall

Don't fear your left
Don't trust your right
Activist

Independent activism away from unreliable political parties and church against the loss of their land great misery indigenous people are forced to live in favour of multinational corporations. All over the world and especially in Latin America indigenous people and tribes struggle against the invaders for timber, mines, ranching, and now for GMO and biofuel agriculture. The new madness, the biofuel plants demand great occupation of agricultural land and so enhance food crisis especially in the poor countries.

"Traffic in the Sky" by Jack Johnson, Album: On and on (2003)

There's traffic in the sky
and it doesn't seem to be getting much better
There's kids playing games on the pavement
Drawing waves on the pavement
Shadows of the planes on the pavement

It's enough to make me cry
But that don't seem like it would make it feel better
Maybe it's a dream and if I scream
it will burst at the seams and
this whole place will fall into pieces
and then they'd say...

Well how could we have known?
I'll tell them it's not so hard to tell
if you keep adding stones
soon the water will be lost in the well
Puzzle pieces in the ground
but no one ever seems to be digging

Instead they're looking up towards the heavens
with their eyes on the heavens
the shadows on the way to the heavens
It's enough to make me cry
but that don't seem like it would make it feel better

When there is an excess in use of an activity, no matter their nature, too many problems can be appeared and a consequent loss of life quality.
